The time of year is upon us when we tend to start thinking about shorts. We get to free our bottom limbs and run free! But we must not forget that traditional jean shorts are not the only option. Actually, let’s just get rid of zippers and buttons entirely! That’s right folks, I’m talking about cute, fashionable, comfortable pull-on shorts. In the words of Kim Cattrall, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself”. While she wasn’t necessarily talking about zippered/buttoned shorts, it could easily be included in the meaning. Pull-on shorts are inherently the most comfortable and least restricting type of shorts. The team has been singing their praises for years. But for some reason, we’ve only ever done posts dedicated to the more athletic versions. Well, that stops today because we are on the hunt and thought you might be too. Let’s start. These were the shorts that inspired this post. Marlee was the one to actually suggest this post idea because she had just started her pull-on short search. Naturally, we all agreed it was a great idea because we love a pull-on short and these ones were total winners. They are a little more expensive, but are sustainably made (from Reformation), and are so classic that they will never so out of style. For a similar stripe with a little more going on detail-wise, how fun are these?! I love the frayed hem, the paperbag waist, and how the stripes also have a little design within them. These would be great to throw on around town or perfect next to a body of water. Perfect for at home or on vacation. They also come in a solid patterned cream version (you’ll get what I mean when you look at them). Damson Madder is a very cool London-based, sustainable brand that my cool friend told me about last year. Needless to say, I was happy to see that Anthro did a collab with them! They are known for their fits and these shorts are so freaking cute. Definitely in the world of the boxer shorts trend but a little more refined. But if you love the red stripe look but want more of a nautical feel, these J. Crew ones are awesome. Vibrant but classic. FYI, these shorts are the most expensive on the list but also…look at them. These heavenly beauts are SO fun and since they’re from Farm Rio, I know without a doubt super high quality. The details are so special! It is a part of a set (here’s the top) but these could easily be worn with so many other tops. A loose white button-up would be effortless. These definitely give “vacation” but I say let home feel like a vacation too when you pop these cuties on. Another fun option! I love the color (but they also come in sand with a plus size option), that statement tie at the top, and the stitching. Plus, the length is so nice. No chance of those cheeks saying hello:) They are just a little more tailored and special than your average pull-on short. Sorry for the blurry photo but it was the best I could do. Anyway, how great is that green! These are also in that boxer short trend category which I am very tempted to try. They just look so damn comfy but also cute. I know it’s not for everyone but at the price I might give it a whirl. Plus, so great for poolside, right? (But can we also talk about the cuffs of the top??) I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know about the viral “denim” sweatpants Em was wearing in this post until I looked it up after she talked about them. They sound INCREDIBLE. So when I saw they had a shorts version, I HAD to include them. Duh. They come in three different washes (one lighter and one darker than the one pictured above), and if they are nearly as comfortable as everyone says the pants are, these are a homerun. But if you want a pull-on short that isn’t printed to look like a jean but is still comfy here are two great options under $50. The ones on the left do not have any stretch (aside from the elastic band) but will give you a cool relaxed look. Love that wash color. Then those cuties on the right have that sweet ruffled hem. They are also lower rise so keep that in mind whether that’s your preference or not. A Madewell soft, denim boxer short? Sign me up! Easy, soft to the touch, cute, and made with their “summer-friendly cotton-blend Airy Denim”. That means they are perfect for the warmer weather. I also know Caitlin and Arlyn have been big fans of Madewell’s pull-on shorts in the past. Why yes, you can be this chic for $25;) I mean get outta here, right? These tonal stripes and that sleek waistband are so good. Just enough color without it looking too bold. You could wear these to the office or on vacation, easily. They also have a bunch of other colors and pattern options if you are interested:) More “boxers” but that pocket is so cute! I just couldn’t resist. Also from Madewell, also super light and also extremely comfortable. These two feel less boxer-like to me because of the cuts (absolutely love how the sides are shorter) and the drawstring detail. The dark navy ones also come in a bright green and the light blue ones have a matching button-up top. These are great swim coverups too! And if you love a drawstring but not a print, these Reformation shorts are beautiful. So simple but so versatile. They come in three other neutral colors and these would be a breeze to dress up or down. For some additional solids, I adore the pockets on the Madewell cuties on the left. They come in 5 other color and pattern options but the style is what really makes them look less like a pull-on and more like a “normal short”. They’ll never know how comfortable you are! Then for a steal at $22, these Old Navy ones are the perfect throw-on-and-go pair that also come in seven other colors:) Aside from the sweet gingham print (it also comes in a butter yellow) I really love the texture of these shorts. They are made to look super relaxed and boy do they. Also, that price? SO GOOD. More Stripes but with really fun details! The contrast pattern trim on the pockets and the cuffed bottoms on the left shorts make me want to add to cart immediately. Then if you like a little metallic moment in your pull-on shorts there is a silver thread in the shorts on the right you’ll love. Fun but neutral:) Stripes aren’t the only pattern we love. These floral cuties are so fun! They come in seven other colors in petite, standard and plus sizes. The options are endless and CUTE. Would you believe these are Abercrombie? I know we’ve been raving about their evolution for a minute but it’s still so exciting! These mid-rise (yes!)summertime linen shorts are playful, chic, and highly rated. If shells aren’t your style they have seven other options to choose from. The florals continue on:) Not really sure why the shorts on the left are being called a skort because in every photo they really look like shorts but I wouldn’t be mad about either way. Love the high waist, the flowy bottom, and that subtle but playful print. I think if I had to choose a floral short it would be these ones on the right:) I can’t get enough of that pattern and for whatever reason they almost feel slightly sporty? I just think they are so freaking fun. These are the same AE ones from the beginning of these post but I really loved these colors and pattern:) Ok, onto the next! A flared “skirty” short? CUTE! I’m a big olive green fan (as you’ll see) and the cut/seams of these are so good. For the shorts on the right, I know they are way sportier than all the other ones but I couldn’t help myself and had to include. LOVE the patterned drawstring, such a fun addition to make something simple a little extra special. And those pockets are cool too! These last two options will likely be a little style-specific but I love them so much. These ones how overly relaxed and kinda baggy these are. They are mid-rise, mid-length, and cut up on the sides so have have a little more of a sexy shape. I want a pair bad! Oh and there are two different denim wash options. Those pockets are so sick. It’s almost like the coolest construction belt you’ve ever seen. I couldn’t decide which was I like more so I put in both. These are also on my fashion wish list! That’s it from me. If you’ve been needing some shorts I truly hope this was helpful. No need to not be the most comfortable (but cute) at any given moment, right? Love you, mean it.
Read MoreThere I was innocently shopping with one of my best friends and I spotted a polka dot mini skirt that my heart was telling me to try on. But “heart,” my brain said, “We don’t really wear polka dots. It’s not our style.” To that, my heart said, “Hush, let me try something new!” And try I did. Actually, my friend tried on that very same skirt and we both walked out of the store with new matching polka skirts. Since then polka dots have been everywhere I look, from Old Navy to Sezane to Hanifa. Polka dots are obviously not new in any way, a true classic if you will, but this version, a potentially fresh version where the dots are bigger and bolder has me veeeeeery interested in a way I’ve never been. So yes, this polka dot resurgence trend isn’t the tiny dots of yore. They are larger and tend to be more spaced out. Even the celebs are out here all dotted up (don’t worry that incredible chic set Jackie Tohn is wearing is below:))! There truly are so many incredible and cool options online that it was extremely hard to make cuts. I might even consider grabbing another piece for myself. So whether you have loved polka dots since birth or like me are just warming up to the idea, I think there is really something for everyone here. Let’s take a look! I had to put Jackie’s outfit up first because it’s perfect. And what’s even better is that not only can you obviously wear them together for a bold but chic polka dot look, they are so fun as separates. Plus, Sezane’s quality is so so good. I really love the brown and cream mix because it feels so versatile for spring, summer, and fall! It was hard not to include all of Sezane’s new polka dot items but I had to put in this button-blouse (and a few more down below and you’ll see why:)). The slight puff sleeve, the adorable neckline, it’s just one of those versatile tops that can be a little dressy or dressed down more casually. Regardless you will look effortlessly put together. And see what I mean about these medium to large dot sizes. They feel fresher which is why I think I’m now all of a sudden more drawn to them. Now, this sleeveless black top is giving sexy but in a modest way. I have one of their tops with the same neckline and I love it. It’s simple and sophisticated. But adding in those big cream dots makes this top so fun (I love how cream is less of a contrast to bright white)! Another one you could put under a blazer or just wear with jeans. And speaking of sexy polka dot tops these two are right in that category. The cuts are modest but if you want to show a little skin that option is there for you. I love the angled hemline of the mesh top a lot and if you aren’t up for the bra look, I think a thin black tank top would totally work under this too. Now, the white puff sleeve cutie is very deceiving which is kinda what I love most about it. It looks very sweet and modest but you will be showing a little skin down the middle;) If you prefer the more classic black and white polka dot look, I LOVE these pants. Some of the sizes are sold out but this brand goes up to a 3x! I really like the size of the dots and how spread out they are. These make me want to continue my journey of being a “cool pants and top” person rather than a “cute top and jeans” person:) Both “people” are great but having fun pants, whether that be a cool print or a fun cut, has been such a blast. Like, what!? CHIC!!!!! I know this style of a two-piece set isn’t for everyone but I do want to be her. Again, there’s a lot of negative space between the dots which I’m clearly a fan of, and the loose, easy breezy vibe/fit also makes the polka dots feel different. I guess I’ve always associated polka dots with 1950s (?) style which is so cute but has never been my personal style. So to see them in styles that are more current is also why I think I’m coming around to them more. Sezane? Why, of course! This is a beautiful but playful jumpsuit that again, could be dressed up or down! The draping effect they did on the bust is so cool and it’s just such a cool look. Below is the beautiful model, Jennifer Atilémile, in this jumpsuit so you can see it in action: Now let’s talk skirts, shall we? Both of these are wonderful but have some differences. The skirt on the left has those bigger dots (my fav), is a little less full, and has that sweet button detail on the side. It’s also $168. The skirt on the right is a little fuller, has pockets, is high-waisted, and is only $40. Both great! This one is of course extra fun because it’s blue! The dots are bigger but closer together which makes it visually a little busier but also so fun! And not for nothing, J. Crew’s site is 40% off right now and this best-selling skirt is included… Well, I can’t be stopped. These are both Sezane and make me want to walk around Paris popping in and out of cafes. I don’t think I have to say much because the photos speak for themselves. But what I will say is this may need to be a polka dot Easter with all of these cute options! And we haven’t even talked about the dresses yet. I mean, if these two dresses don’t scream Easter or just springtime in general I don’t know what does. The dress on the left not only has the prettiest cut but it’s J. Crew so this puppy is over $50 off! Then that linen shirt dress might be one of the most joyful dresses (casual category) I’ve seen in a minute. That blue is stunning, the large dots are awesome, and all of the other details are so pretty. It doesn’t come in other colors but this is the only polka dot option. Oh, and it’s a Boden dress which I know so many of you love:) And because we love Boden too, look at this jumpsuit! Again, the color is the best and the contrast belt + neckline somehow makes it better. I think it would be very difficult to have a bad day if you were wearing this. Ok. This one isn’t your average polka dot dress and my god is it something special. It’s from a brand called Hanifa and if you are looking for A LOOK that’s beautifully made look no further. I have a piece from them and it’s incredible. But this dress, in particular, is nothing short of a showstopper. For some polka dots that lean a little more classic, the brown dress is so pretty, a bestseller, and has a slightly open back for a little surprise. The dress on the right is perfect for a spring wedding, right? It’s so fun, stretchy, and slightly colorful. You are also pretty covered with just those shoulders popping out to say hi. Oh, and both are under $150! Both of these beauts are super classic and elegant but also versatile for different occasions. These are a little more expensive than the last two but given the retailers, great quality. And you can’t tell from this photo but the black one has the CUTEST scalloped collar (?) along the neckline. You should absolutely go to the site to see it. And here we are at the end. For those who love a slip-type of dress, I love these two. The one on the right is a little dressier and the bra situation could be tricky but if you can believe it, it’s from OLD NAVY and is only $50! I was so impressed when I saw it on the site. The other option is definitely more expensive but it looks like you can easily wear it with a standard bra and looks like you could wear it more casually to like say brunch:) That’s it for me today! Did I gently sway my fellow non-polka dot-wearing friends? Did any catch your eye? Do you still prefer the mini-sized dot?? Love you, mean it.
Read MoreIt’s that special time of year (ha) – our tans aren’t on yet (well, they are for some of us LOL) and we usually aren’t as “ready” in all the ways we want to be, but alas swimsuit season is upon and we should feel great regardless. I mean it’s about to be warm and we can be outside as much as we want! Every year we do swimsuits post with different body sizes, preferences, price points, etc – but all driven by what we feel really good in because if you don’t, you won’t wear them. It’s not easy but when you have one you love it makes spring/summer life so much easier and is such a confidence boost. I have some new ones that I bought specifically for our Belize trip which was very, very active (think more spelunking and kayaking than cute beach outfits). So below you’ll find what I bought and wore for those purposes. I wore this rashguard suit no less than 6 times over the 10 days because the Caribbean sun was so hot on my fair flesh and reapplying sunscreen was its own full-time job (and not great for the water). And while the princess sleeves might be too cutesy for a lot of people, I’m telling you – this suit is FLATTERING. I had it in blue stripes (til I burst the zipper after wearing it 20 times) and in rainbow (which is admittedly a bit toddler-esque but I wore it during Pride month a lot). I don’t love the belt they sell with it, but if you are into belted suits that’s an add-on. So I just bought the red and love it. The other two styles had a bra shelf for support and this one didn’t, but I had already bought their matching red bikini top to go underneath it (shown in the photo). It’s a compression suit, meaning that it has 2-3 layers that hold you IN without being uncomfortable (I’m wearing a small). It is very smoothing and shows no little bumps and diminishes pouches if that’s of interest to you (it is for me). Yes, they are so expensive and I wish they weren’t. But I wore this suit snorkeling then to the pool then to lunch then to dinner, with swimshorts or those lightweight jean shorts – I lived in it. And I felt really cute and protected all day. 10/10 (but wish this one had the support shelf, TBD). OK. This is another magical suit from TA3 that frankly, makes your body look really hourglass-y (without the corset back). I wore this A LOT which Brian was thrilled about, LOL. I’m wearing a small and the bust is a bit small, but still fits (these TA3 suits are made for curvier gals to enhance and tuck, and boy do they work). If you have smaller love pillows you might not want this type of constriction nor will it be as figure-flattering. But for curvier ladies, it’s been game-changing. They also have long or short torso options. My only beef with this company is that I want less crazy bright colors. This comes in black which I’m going to buy as well after wearing and loving this one so much in Belize. Oh, and it’s a medium-rise in the leg which is so flattering and doesn’t cut in at all (but is a little bit cheeky in a good way). I would have shot it that way for this post but I had yet to get waxed before my trip, so… This one-piece is also a compression suit from Stylest and I love the square neck and the white stripes. I ended up wearing this one only once because I think I need to size up (this is a small) so I was spilling over the top a lot, and not in a good way. So I wish I had bought the medium instead (and still might). It also cuts in a bit around the thigh (low cut) but I think that’s due to being a bit too small. Ah, the famous Andie Malibu swimsuit. Five of my friends have this suit because it’s so easy to wear, comfortable, supportive (it has a shelf), and looks like a tank top so it is the best “around town on vacation” suit in case you should want to jump in (which we did). I wore this cave tubing, kayaking in the mangroves, and in town a bunch (as well as at the pool/beach). I would love a brighter blue version or stripes on it. It’s definitely my go-to in Portland for the hot tub, too. Unphotoshopped Women Honestly Review Summersalt’s 3 Bestselling Swimsuits This post was our first Summersalt review post where we got to include a couple of our wonderful contributors. Again, always honest and never any photoshopping! Where To Buy ALL The Best Swimsuits (Affordable, Black Owned, AND Size-Inclusive) – Because I’ve Been Heavily Insta-Marketed, Believe Me Not all of our swimsuit posts still have the suits available but we did a post about 27 different swimwear brands that you can shop from if you are looking for some new options! Another Swimsuit Review: This Time On 27 Different Women With Different Bodies & Swimwear Needs This post is one of those that likely a lot of the suits aren’t available but I wanted to include it in this post because we did a reader call out where we asked if anyone had any swimsuit recommendations. They would just need to take a photo of them in their suit, write a little blurb, and then I would of course pay them since I know how vulnerable it can be putting yourself on the internet in a swimsuit. But wow were we blown away by these beautiful women! If you want a feel-good post as we enter swimsuit season, this is a great one. Hope this was helpful on the swimsuit search journey this year.
Read MoreIhave a big shoot coming up in LA in a couple of weeks and I was tasked to find a wardrobe for a “fun, summer BBQ” which is obviously right up my alley (shooting in Orange County). I need 3-5 looks so I tried on a lot of tops (and a couple of dresses), and these are my favorites FOR SURE. So while I’m out of the country with my fam, here are some cute spring/summer blouses that I really love (just not sure I need ALL of them, but we’ll see). I haven’t really curated outfits yet, just dialing in the top first since that is what you’ll see the most, then I’ll pair it with the right pants/shorts. So if you are underwhelmed by the pants and shoes being the same I get that :) Love this. It’s a solid yes because it’s a good cut, a good color, the embroidery detail is great, and it’s lightweight enough for summer, but still has good structure. The little princess sleeves are so flattering. I can’t tell if I need to size up as it’s pulling a bit in the chest area (wearing a size small), but I love it. The pants are the barrel pants that I LOVE right now (button-fly making them more flattering and the length is perfect). The shoes were from last year and I hadn’t worn them yet (from Beek which is spendy, but I love their shoes so much). Another Sezane number that I thought would look good with white shorts (not these though). I love this top but my only beef with Sezane is that their fabric is often thick (which is great) but also long and with a straight hem, making them hard to 1/2 or even full tuck. This shirt is great on camera and has a lot of detail, but I wish it weren’t so thick so it could tuck better (and I have a short torso so if you have a longer torso you might not need to tuck). I love this blouse – a lot of detail, but still simple and easy to understand on camera I.e. not busy). It’s lightweight, has covered buttons, and that sweet little collar. I guess it’s all out of stock in this color (sorry!) even though I just bought it! Boo! 10/10 I LOVE THIS and just ordered the dress version to see if it could work as well. This blouse is so pretty and flattering and the second I put it on I was like “Oh wow, this is so good”. Extremely airy/lightweight, the colors are so pretty, the neckline so flattering, easy to tuck, pretty sleeve details – just perfect. I tried it with these cute new shorts which I really love (and they come in a lot of colors) but I think I like it with the pants more. I have this blouse in pink from last year which I love, but my only beef is that it’s really oversized intentionally. This is a small (I just ordered an XS to see if that would fit better). The pattern is so pretty and it’s so easy breezy to wear. Madewell did an almost exact knockoff of this shirt in white that is more affordable, but Doen has these pretty patterns. LOVE THIS. I’m wearing this top on spring break a lot because no one does, “I still look nice, but I’m not sticky” like Emerson Fry. Such an easy cut to wear, so lightweight, with beautiful colors and patterns. LOVE. Here is another one that is oversized (only comes in one size, actually) and I think a better summer shirt than for a photo shoot. Comes in a lot of colors and is so easy to wear. Love those shorts, A LOT. I was excited about this, but I think it’s giving safari in a way that I probably don’t want for my BBQ shoot. I love that top though, a lot. It’s a bit thicker (think denim weight) and is easy to tuck (and comes in a couple of other colors). This is a nice, sweet blouse, with cute denim shorts – no one is mad at this outfit, but maybe could be more fun? I’ve been wearing this shirt a ton since I got it – thin, but not too thin, drapey denim with ruffles (that are holding up well after washing/drying a few times FYI). I want it in the short-sleeved version like the white one, too. Those Gap Bermuda shorts are SOLID. I sent all of these to the client so we’ll see what they choose (and I have more to try on). However, if you are in the market for cute spring/summer blouses I really love all of these :)
Read MoreIdidn’t set out to buy new denim when I went shopping – heck, I don’t LOVE wearing restricting clothes at all (a covid holdover), but I loved some of what I found so much, in a refreshing way – like denim, but dare I say special? Also, if you haven’t checked out the spring basics post, there are shorts and jeans in that post (that are just great staples), but this one is more head to toe denim (with a few matching sets I’m obsessed with). Let’s dig into it. Hands down my favorite “shirt of the summer” (tied with this one from the Gap – both so good). I’ve worn it so many times since I got it because it’s both casual and stylish (versus a denim button-up that mostly reads as casual). I also love the one I’m wearing in the opener for a more western inspired button-up (that is super affordable). Now the shorts I think are more on trend and stylish than my shorty shorts that I typically wear. I bought them (and modeled them) for those of you who don’t LOVE wearing short shorts, because they are really good. They flare in a good way and that cuff is strong and cool. They aren’t the trendy “bermuda shorts” that were in last year, they are more flattering and yet still long. I added the belt to make it look pulled together (which worked!). Now, this denim dress is a real affordable winner, clocking in on sale at $29.99. So easy to throw on, dress up, dress down, light weight, cute, flattering, comfortable, not body-con – all the things I like in a spring/summer daytime dress. The sandals I bought last year, and they are the most wearable around town heels that I own (like I wouldn’t go out for an intentional long walk in them, but heels that you can wear all day, out and about, walking for hours and be super comfortable). This is the other button-up that felt worth having (love the little western pockets and so affordable). It’s a bit thicker (less drapey) so good for more structure or to wear as a shacket. But the real reason we are here is to talk about the famous SWEATPANT JEANS!! Yes, these are the Rag & Bone, printed jeans that are actually sweats. My review of them is “darn incredible” because they are obviously incredibly comfortable. They look “real” (even the backpockets are printed). Now, I get why they are expensive ($238) as I’m sure they had to perfect and have the perfect printing ink and technique to look so real, but I ended up returning because I mostly work from home (where I can wear more affordable, comfortable clothes). Plus, if I am to leave the house and want to look cute I’d opt for actual jeans. But for people who have to leave the house daily to look presentable and still want to be super comfortable, these are 9/10 (again, missing a point because so $$$). If you want SUPER soft and comfortable but not seatpants and not $238, I bought and kept these Dean jeans from Madewell, which are not printed, but just somehow soft, a bit drapy and extremely comfortable. Like I would wear them on a plane kind of comfortable (always baffled by people who wear hard pants on a plane, TBH). I’ve been wearing this on repeat since I got them – IMHO the easiest to wear denim jumpsuit I’ve owned – not trying to be all hour-glassy and therefore uncomfortable after lunch, but has a slim enough leg that you aren’t just one big box. I like the short sleeves and the tapered leg, and it’s mid-weight so it falls nicely, isn’t too constricting or thick and is just so darn easy to wear. Plus, huge pockets for your phone, etc – I literally throw this on when I want to look stylish but still need to work (i.e. on set, styling, shopping, etc). Well this was a surprise – both from H&M and super affordable and so darn cute! Granted I like wearing boxy tops and tiny skirts, so this isn’t for everyone, but this is in my “spring date night” arsenal for sure. The sandals are Korkease (so very comfortable for heels). I LOVED this outfit – it’s more of a city look for sure, but I’m so excited to have it as a go-to for when I go to New York for meetings where I want to look cool, be comfortable, make a statement, but not stress. It’s oversized but there are so many times where we all just want to look cool but don’t necessarily let people see our bodies, and this checks the box for me. Also, that dark wash is super in (with the silver buttons and contrasting stitching). LOVE THIS LOOK. This last one that I’ve become super obsessed with is this denim dress that looks like a shirt and skirt!!! But it’s a dress!! Finally a non-body-con denim dress that is so flattering. I think a belt would even make this outfit look better. Cute with sneakers or sandals, great with clogs – just a nice “I’m casual, comfortable but still cool” outfit but with just one piece of clothing. HUGE FAN.
Read MoreWe are ready up here for spring (had a few mid 60s sunny days in February which is always such a tease). I’m mostly just fantasizing about spring break (sun! warmth! very little wifi!). So as I went shopping I found a decent amount of stuff that I LOVED, mostly on the affordable side (which is all relative I know). And per usual I try on a LOT more that I don’t love or wouldn’t bother to show you, so these are my favorites :) Solid long sleeve shirt with a raglan sleeve that looks so casual and still fun. 10/10 love that shirt. The pants are the famous Madewell darted barrel jeans in a cream (not bright white which always makes me nervous!) and this time I sized down to make them fit a bit more flattering. The Milano Birks I’ve had for years and I was pretty proud of myself for putting on a belt, which makes me feel VERY pulled together (bandana is old Clare V. but they sell something similar). A great thin white top (very Doen-esque) that is easy to tuck and perfect for humidity or high heat. I paired it with Gap’s new Bermuda short (which are long and not too tight but not too wide). They are GREAT (see them below in cream). But for those of you who like the skirt route, we LOVED this denim prairie style skirt – medium-weight, but has a nice thick hem at the bottom to keep some sort of structure. Would also just be cute with a sweatshirt or a tank top (this look was a bit too “church” for me, but admittedly pretty cute). HUGE fan of this short sleeved sweatshirt (it’s coming with me on spring break for mornings). It 1/2 tucks really nicely, looks cute with shorts, jeans, skirts, athleisure – just a real win for when you want to be casual but still look fun. These are the white versions of the longer Gap shorts – BIG FAN. Clocking in at $24.99 this is my summer “play dress” – tie anything around its waist, throw on sneakers (with socks if you want to be cool, I do not) and go have fun. I could even play pickle ball in it, perfect for long walks to the village for a beer – just so easy and affordable. This shirt was a splurge, but my goodness it’s so pretty. It’s coming with me for spring break because it’s cotton so it’s still really breathable (so good for dinners with bugs but still warm at night). While this is Farm Rio (which typically is very resort wear) I think this is a solid spring and summer top that I will wear ALL THE TIME. A solid denim short and breezy white top with cute stitching (so great for hotter climates). And I even paired with more of a statement necklace which is pretty dang cute. While the leopard pants are certainly not “affordable spring basics” (I love them BTW) the shirt sure is. It’s from The Gap and is so flattering and looks very high end, IMHO. Here I’m wearing a small (which I returned for an XS) so it runs pretty big. It’s rather long (which I stuffed into my leopard stretch pants, as you do) and the buttons on the sleeve are so pretty. I LOVE this shirt (dark denim is a thing right now) and it comes in white and black as well. But yeah, the leopard hot pants are giving RHONJ in a way that I’m actually into (but dressing them down with a sweatshirt might be the better move). I was so intrigued with this convertible Gap top – very architectural and cool. The buttons unsnap, going from a longer shirt with a tail to more of a cropped boxy shape. I’m wearing an xs and it’s still pretty oversized. I really liked it but ended up returning it just because I didn’t think I’d wear it that often (since I don’t go into an office). The skirt is a new mini from H&M that is pretty dang cute (and I bought the top to match – denim post coming soon!). Here’s the top in action! Another great lightweight peasant skirt with such a cute ruffle. For me, the winner is the H&M denim shirt – it’s stiff, more like a shacket in a good way, and has the cutest Western-style buttons. Feels FAR more expensive than it is. Of all the white blouses that I tried, this is the one I know I’ll wear the most this spring. It has a lot of structure to it, feels more like canvas or denim than cotton. But such a flattering fit and the stitching and ruffles are so cute. The jeans are CRAZY COMFY, so much stretch and drape and yet still flattering. I tried on the famous sweatpant jeans (which I LOVED, TBH) but these are 1/2 the price for almost the same level of comfort (and without printed pockets). This outfit was a bit controversial because those are bona fide culottes. Half of us thought it was a cool, more androgynous look, the other half wasn’t sure. While I typically would wear smaller shorts, admittedly this looks cool and stylish. And yes, those clogs are still my current favorites for when I want some height (but with comfort). The jacket is a perfect spring half trench coat (not sure that’s a thing) that has a cute collar, pockets and buttons (and H&M so very affordable). Lots of good things, now just if the Oregon weather will behave :)
Read MoreIt’s 60 degrees and sunny in Portland (February 28th) so people are in shorts and drinking margaritas (I’m cutting out early at 3 pm to go on a long family bike ride along the river). And while we have a couple more months of potential rain up here, I know a lot of people go to the sun for spring break (including us – we are off to Belize with the kids which I’m INCREDIBLY excited and grateful for – never been and the personal reviews from so many people have me pumped). When we went to Costa Rica for Spring break a couple years ago, I didn’t bring the right humidity-friendly clothes – too many jean shorts which is decidedly not what you want to wear when it’s 90 percent humidity. And yet at night you don’t want to just sit in a tiny dress at dinner. So I did shop a bit and after trying on many many dresses, these were the four that I thought were worth recommending. Here you go :) This was my #1 – so soft and drapey, thin (but not see through), drawstring but not tight, flattering but not fitted. I have been shopping and wearing Emerson Fry since before DesignStar (budget depending) and it’s just such high quality made in America stuff that is so timeless and lasts. The prints say “spring/summer/vacation” without just screaming “TROPICAL RESORT” so I think I can also wear this all summer long up here. So flattering, such good details with the stitching – a 10/10. Oh, and I have found that with the bugs it’s actually nice to be more covered up at night for dinner. I loved the color and pattern of this dress – with big balloon sleeves. This one is a bit warmer (still cotton, just slightly thicker) and yet still drapes really well (not too stiff). It has pockets, too. Definitely a great boho dress all spring/summer, especially if you live in one of the southern states. I was surprised how flattering this dress is for being really voluminous. Because I have bigger ladies, these types of dresses don’t always work on me (just where the umpire seam hits at the mid-boob) but this one was fitted enough in the armpits, and the seam was low enough that it falls really well into the tiered skirt. I don’t need all four of these so I’m still deciding between this one and the brighter pink one – literally can’t decide!! This one is so fun and swingy – with pockets and a low V. My only issue with this (and why I decided to return it) is that the V comes so low into a drawstring that you either have to not wear a bra, wear a pretty showy bra or wear a swimsuit underneath. Here I’m not wearing a bra because the one I had on yesterday was NOT a pretty showy bra (flesh toned and meh), and that 5 minutes of shooting this bra-less felt VERY scandalous :) No thank you! But it’s a really pretty dress and comes in a pink color as well. Ok, this is such a fun look, but pretty specific, ie, very resortwear. People love Farm Rio and I do, too! But I find that I simply don’t have enough opportunity to wear this type of look in Portland (and the set together is expensive). This does scream resort or SoCal summer and it’s undeniably cute, but I don’t think I have the lifestyle to support wearing it enough to spend the money (and have it take up real estate in my closet). But if you are going on vacation and want a cute set to show off – I LOVED THIS. Oh be warned, I ordered a small top (which fit great – so good over a suit) and a medium bottom and the bottom still cuts in too much in the waist for me. All in all, I’ve learned that I don’t really wear very cute “looks” on these more kid-focused adventure jungle vacations. It’s a lot of playable swim suits, cute swim shorts, and Tevas, then loose clothes at night that don’t stick to me, so I’ll likely bring that first dress for dinners and I’ll wear it over and over :) We are so excited to explore some Mayan ruins, zip line, snorkel, and do lots of cave exploration (i.e, I’m not bringing any platform sandals on this one). Let me know if you want me to do a recap on the Belize trip – I never did a Costa Rica blog post, actually, so if you want our itinerary from that trip let me know and I’ll share (it was a 15/10 itinerary, BTW – the entire family loved every second of it – thus us going back to a similar vibe, but with ruins and Caribbean waters instead). Often recapping these trips feels braggy so I kinda avoid it but I also know how helpful it is so share our experience in case you are planning yours (and these beautiful countries are still really affordable once you get down there.) We rounded up more vacation dresses for you – Sandals, Affordable Spring basics, and “New Spring Refreshingly Good Head to Toe Denim” posts are coming soon… Love the colors and the mix of prints! The reviews say the fabric is lightweight, but there are differing views on whether or not you need a slip if you want to use it more than a vacation cover up:) So pretty regardless and also worth a slip purchase if needed! This might be a little more “spring” than “spring break” but either way it’s so pretty! For only $42 you get the chinching, the puff sleeves and that beautiful pink color. But if pink isn’t your thing, it comes in two other colors. Now this screams spring break. That bold pattern is extremely fun and the green is so bright and happy. Did I mention it’s only $35 and comes in two other colors? This colorway is decidedly the most “vacation-y” but all of them are fun. Such a pretty Farm Rio dress that could effortlessly work for both a vacation and a fun spring event. The colors feel fun but not too bold and the pattern is just so beautiful. If you like a shorter cover-up, both of these are great! I love how the colors are the main event for the one on the left while the pattern is the statement for the one on the right. You can’t really miss with either. This one looks very chic and sophisticated but it’s only $45. A steal! This is great for someone is who doesn’t love super bright colors but sill wants a classic vacation look. Oh, this one is good. And from the over 300 reviews giving it over 4 stars, we are correct in our assessment. The warm pink strips are so pretty and the added orange accents make it “vacation”. Love it. Another super affordable ($30) spring/spring break dress! A belt is always a nice option for some shape too. That print is really good. For my simple stripe lovers, this dress is for you. It’s so versatile and could go from the office to the beach to brunch with a change of a few accessories and shoes. It comes in two other colors if you prefer a solid color. I wanted to throw in a couple more slightly “formal spring” options because they were pretty and some of us need those too. That white eyelet dress is so pretty and under $100! Then the print and shape of the floral dress is real good. Perfect for Easter, a spring trip to Europe, or any other slightly dressier occasion:) Hope this was helpful.
Read MoreWe are jeans people. It’s not that we don’t love dresses, skirts, etc. but most of the time we are sporting a beloved pair of denim. Last week, we were chatting about the barrel jean trend and thought maybe we should all do a try-on to see how each of us liked them. But then Em had a better (and VERY generous) idea. I mean, jean styles are super personal and rarely does a single pair of jeans work on everyone, despite what a certain movie might have us believe:). Emily offered to pay for a pair of jeans that we LOVED (max $140 then anything above that would be on us). Obviously, that amount of money is plenty for what’s on the current market and needless to say, we were very excited and so grateful. Some jeans are ones we already owned and are still available while others are brand new. We were PUMPED to try some new styles. Come see what we are wearing:) Emily Y’all this denim world is cracking me up – apparently skinny jeans ARE back but only with certain types of boots of a certain height? And while we likely hit peak barrel jean last year, they are going nowhere (because they are far more flattering than just the pure baggy jeans). It’s all making me LOL. Obviously, I typically love a skinny jean but also have gotten used to not having the constriction (once I went “drop crotch” it’s been hard to go back). I bought these Madewell jeans at the end of last year and I was very very very surprised at how good they are. I don’t love all Madewell jeans (often I feel like they don’t keep me in around the places that I want more control). I think it took a long time for big brands to get the cut of the barrel jean right, in a more affordable way. These are mid-rise which I prefer on my short torso/big love pillowed frame. I prefer these with a bit of a heel for some height, but I wear them with sneakers a lot, too. Caitlin I’m kicking off 2025 with some unexpected, last-minute travel – and, when left with minutes to pack my suitcase, I eschewed all other bottoms in favor of two pairs of Everlane’s Way-High Curve Jeans. This isn’t my first time singing their praises on the blog (I really love them, gang), but I’m still so pleased with the way that they fit and fall on my bottom-heavy body. It’s often a challenge finding pants that don’t cling to my big thighs and ultra-wide hips, and it can be pretty discouraging – like, why can’t I just wear clothes like everyone else? – but these jeans make me feel like a million bucks. They fall just around my belly button, which is the perfect spot for me (unlike Em, I love a high-rise!) and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day even when I’m just working from home. If you’re also rocking a pear shape, I really think you’ll love these – they just bring some really nice balance to my bottom half! I got a 31, which is my normal Madewell/Anthro size (and I go for the 27″ inseam because I love a little sock pop!). I have 3 pairs – in Calico Ecru, Pure Blue, and Ocean (above) – and I’m just so, so, so happy that I took the plunge on them. Jess Before I went to Everlane in person, my favorite jeans were the lighter blue ones on the left! Big kudos to Les Bunge for picking them out and giving them to me as a Christmas present. I love the high waist, the wide but not too wide leg, and the fun detail at the bottom. My only issue is that the “cuff detail” doesn’t necessarily go with every situation I’m dressing for (mainly evening things). Anyway, when I went to the store I tried on the Deep Blue version and loved them too! I did refrain from buying since the next two are what I came home with. I simply didn’t need THREE pairs of new jeans, especially when I have one of those three in a slightly different style. But if you do need a simple, wide-ish leg these are 20/10 for me. I did size down in the photo since they do “relax” fairly quickly and I was on the cusp of the two sizes anyway (plus, I prefer a tighter fit). FYI I’m a day or two in of wearing the lighter blue ones in the bigger size if knowing that is helpful. Still so happy with them! P.S. I feel like I should say that I am a HUGE Everlane jean stan (as you will soon continue to read). Every pair I’ve ever owned (which is 4 styles now) I’ve loved. The fits are a dream and the prices are on par or lower than Madewell. I also have to say that if you live in LA, there’s a location in Venice (the only location actually) with just the best people who work there. Any time I’ve shopped (probably 4ish times now) they have gone above and beyond and are just generally so fun. I promise this is in no way sponsored, just genuinely think they are great. Now, those jeans on Kaitlin are ones I have been eyeing because first off they are SO cute on her and she literally calls them “the best jeans ever”. And as you just read, they are LA Caitlin’s favorite too! The nudge and generosity from Emily gave me the perfect excuse to give them a try… TA-DA!! And I also love them. I know barrel jeans aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but I think they are so freaking fun and add a very cool shape to what can (and usually will) be a simple outfit knowing me. One of my three “style words” (words that help you shop for a cohesive style/wardrobe) is “architectural” and for me, these fit the bill. What I also love is that the denim is on the thinner side (and soft but not too soft) which lets the pant legs still sorta outline your real leg. That way you feel less “stiff clown pants” and more “look, I still have legs in these fun pants”. These were true to size for me and I chose the 27″ inseam which is what they label as “regular” in-store. So if you are taller maybe go for the 29″ inseam. Oh, I’m basically 5’4″ for reference. A surprise! I went into the store on a mission. I wanted to try Kailtin’s barrel jeans first and foremost but then try a handful of other styles just to see. Well…I found another style. I think the first words out of my mouth (as in out loud to myself in the dressing room) were “OH, these are so cool”. There was just simply no way I could leave without them. They fit similar to The Way-High® Sailor Jean but with slightly wider legs. Now let’s talk about THOSE POCKETS. I just can’t say how much I love their size, shape, and how they wrap around the side. I’ve never owned anything like these and I’m almost too happy to own them. I might act like a little kid in their favorite outfit and sleep in them. I sized down in these if that’s helpful! Mallory So I’ve been rocking these $35 H&M wide-leg jeans for almost a year now (I have them in 2 colorways I love them so much!) but I really wanted a jean that was less baggy and more fitted without being fully skinny (but also thank god skinny jeans are on their way back — Alix Earle THANK YOU). So I went to Paige because I’ve literally always wanted a pair of Paige jeans…my friend used to work at their corporate office and said they literally design their jeans to make your booty pop. WELL POP IT DOES in these Laurel Canyon boot-cut jeans!! I’m so so obsessed with them because they’re SO comfy and stretchy but somehow still hug tight and lift the backend. Very into them (debating hemming them just a bit but we’ll see. I’m also not opposed to just wearing a taller shoe with them or rocking a version of Kendrick Lamar’s jeans). Paige, I thank you for these jeans that are somehow both incredibly comfortable but are also flattering and sexy. YOU DID IT. Gretchen Normally you can find me wearing a pair of vintage men’s Levi’s purchased from a thrift store–worn in with a bit of a straight leg, slightly cropped, and with plenty of leg room. But these can be hard to come by and because they’re men’s, sometimes there’s a little too much room in certain areas, if you catch my drift. I’ve been looking for a pair of women’s jeans that give me the same effortless, vintage vibe but a pair that fits my body better. Oh honey, did I find them. I picked up these perfect Pistola Mid-Rise Bowed Straight-Leg jeans (a mouthful) and have been living in them ever since! They’re a beautiful, classic wash, hit right at my ankles, and sit exactly where I want them to on my hips. But they have a realllllly great shape–a mostly straight leg style that bows ever so slightly at the knee. They’re almost barrel jeans, but not as exaggerated, which works best for me. I can’t really pull off the barrel jean the way so many cool girls can, but this pair makes me feel like I’m one of them anyway! A little on the pricier side, but to me, definitely worth it! Marlee Yay for jeans under $100! I just grabbed another pair of these mid-rise straight leg jeans from Free People – I love these because while the silhouette is super simple, they have a raw hem and a double knee detail that makes them feel special without doing too much! The wash is a perfect indigo and they come in a bunch of other washes – these are the “Be Bold” wash, but eyeing them in a cream color too. They have a tiny bit of crop – I’m 5’8” and pants are notoriously short on me so I typically avoid cropped inseams but these hit at a perfect spot (they come in a short version too if you’re looking for some extra crop!). I’m in between sizes so I sized up this time for a looser fit, but I also have them in a size down in the black and those are a little more fitted in the butt (in a good way). Love them with sneakers and boots for now but excited to wear these around this summer with a cute tee and sandals! Those are the picks! Do you have any you might want to try? Got a favorite you want to share with the class?? Hope this was a fun little insight into our personal styles and gave you a few new ideas you might want to test out. And THANKS AGAIN to Emily.
Read MoreSince we needed to make a last-minute change to the calendar, we got to thinking about what people might be looking for. Well, it’s definitely the rainy season… so at least for me, it’s rainwear. So since half of our team lives in the rain for over half of the year, I thought to ask the rain experts, the EHD Portland team. I picked their brains on what their favorite cute but really good raincoats and boots were. Here are my findings… Rains Long Jacket This was the first jacket they sent through. Gretchen says she really likes this brand a lot and it’s easy to see why. Its unisex utilitarian style paired with the fact it’s water and windproof, all while being lightweight is pretty great. The longer length is nice too. What’s also really nice is that it’s not crazy expensive either. Oh, and there are 12 other colors to choose from! They did say it was a good dupe for this next one I’m about to show you. Stockholm Lightweight Raincoat This one though is THE crowd favorite. When Gretchen texted me she said this was both her and Kaitlin’s (photographer) favorite. It’s also the same brand Emily is wearing in the opening image from 2017! Needless to say, it’s a classic. This one is on the pricier side but is a workhorse that will last you a long time. Moss RainCoat This one I found with a little of my own research. The brand is super trusted and who can resist a classic yellow raincoat?! Curious George in the coolest way:) It does come in navy blue too if that’s more your speed. Weatherproof Oversized Rain Jacket Now, this one really grabbed my attention when they sent over the link because of those big utility pockets. So cool, right!? Gretchen said she hadn’t tried this one in person but LOVES her puffer from this same brand and the reviews on the site are really good. Rainout Ridge Long Trench This was one of my finds (obviously the Portland gals aren’t buying new jackets every year so I wanted a few more options). The color is awesome (also comes in black), the reviews are even better and if you are someone who likes their jackets to have a slightly defined waist, this one has a cinch on the inside of it. It also goes up to 3x in petite, regular, and tall! Perfect Raincoat For a more fashion-forward option that’s water-resistant, this one reminds me of the one I own and love. Getting to wear it is the only reason I’m ok with rainy days. The gold accents pop in such a fun way and it also has some drawstrings if you like some customizable cinching. BLOCKTECH Half Coat For the final jacket, I chose this modern cutie that’s currently on sale for $50! It’s water-repellent, has a hood and a way for you to tuck in if you don’t want it out, and overall looks very chic. From the reviews, it does run a little big but that’s also great for easy layering! Now, let’s get into a few of our favorite rain boots… ONA™ AVE Chelsea Boot Waterproof These are a pair that Emily has and LOVES. They are Sorel so not a huge surprise that they both look great (that brown tone is so pretty!) and keep her nice and dry. Speaking of Sorel… CARIBOU™ X Women’s Chelsea Waterproof Boot Em bought these extremely cool Sorel’s a couple of years ago and they are still on a heavy rotation. She’s wearing them in the opening photo on the beach! I remember her raving about how comfortable and cool she felt in them. They don’t seem to have the plain black anymore but I really love this color too. Sherpa-Lined Chelsea Rain Boots Gretchen sent these ones through because they were really similar to the ones she has and loves/they had great reviews. This is why she loves them: “love a sherpa lined short rain boot, cuz sometimes the rainboot material can make my toes extra cold”. Very good point, Gretch:) Original Short Rain Boot And to end this raingear post, Gretchen of course reminded me that she loves her Hunter rainboots and that they’ve held up really well over the years. It’s nice to make a good purchase once, you know? So that’s it for us. While I was writing this post I got a flashflood warning…whether it’s one of these or pieces you own, stay prepared!
Read MoreGuess who’s back on her ballet flat search?? Me:) But I’m not the only one on the team. Look. We love a cool boot, a fashionable sneaker, but sometimes you just want to slip on a cute flat to feel slightly more put together as you’re rushing out of the house. The last time I was all about ballet flats, I was on the hunt for the mesh version, and boy, did I find one I loved. Because of that deep love, I may have worn them a little too much. It’s kinda like when you only have/wear a single pair of jeans and the inevitable upper thigh hole emerges from constant friction. I want to avoid that intense amount of wear and tear and have a few more easy-to-wear, stylish shoe options. And to me, there’s nothing easier than slipping on a ballet flat. So come see what my research divulged as well as one pair I did purchase:) The Day Glove I wanted to start with the pair that Emily had not only in this color but also in navy. She bought them for our big shoot and loved how easy they were to pop on and off. I love how simple but slightly modern they are. I really like the toe shape and in case tan or navy aren’t your colors, they have 13 other options to choose from! They do recommend going up a half size from your normal size. These give a perfect classic basics look. Faux-Leather Ballet Flats But if we’re going to talk about classics then to me this ballet flat is the epitome of that. Ok, maybe if you added a strap then it would be “peak ballet flat” :) This is also a very sleek shape but has the addition of the traditional thin bow. I don’t think you could go wrong with these and they also come in three other neutral colors if pink isn’t your style. Oh, and did I mention they are $20!! Leather Ballet Flats + Sway Square Toe Ballet Flat This deep burgundy isn’t just a beautiful home color trend, it’s also very much happening in fashion. I am very in love with both of these options. The pair on the left this that classic style but really feels special in that dreamy color…plus that price is not bad. They do also come in tan. Then the pair on the right are on my list!! I learned about Alohas from Emily years ago and not only are their shoes extremely cool, I really love their commitment to sustainability. And while there’s the extra step of tying the bow, I think they are unique without being “too out there”. This pair also comes in two other colors and if you are a half size, they recommend sizing up. Oh, if you love this color I also found a really pretty woven version for $80! The Day Ballet Flat I love velvet. Like a lot. So these puppies are on my list too! Aside from the leather pair above, I’m not a huge ballet bow gal, but for whatever reason, I really like it when the flat is in a velvet. Just think how cute these would be with jeans and a white T-shirt?! Effortlessly cool. Plus, this version is on a great sale, which makes them that much more enticing… They also come in seven other colors, but not all are on sale. The Greta Ballet Flat What a beautiful blue! This shoe is a Madewell bestseller and Emily had their leather open-weave one from last year. She’s traditionally not a huge ballet flat wearer so I very much trust her when she likes one. These are great for either a dress-up or dress-down situation which is real nice – neutral enough but also a little pop of color. But if blue or velvet isn’t your style they have six other colors/designs at varying prices. Go check em out! Valley Black Sole Ballet Flat + Poppy Mary Jane Flat These might not totally be my cup of tea style-wise but at the same time they are so much fun! Those yellow ones are so freaking sweet but I think would also look rad paired with a simple jean and a plain tee. They are from a small shoe brand we love – Intentionally Blank. Emily has known them from when they first opened and I have two of their clogs I wear all of the time. So big stamp of approval from us. Oh, they do come in other colors if you aren’t a yellow person. Then the blue ones are made by Areosoles which makes me think they are likely very comfortable! These ones are also a bit more affordable and have that buckle so you don’t have to worry about tying the bow perfectly every time. It comes perfect! They also come black. Reyes Ballet Flats + Mary Jane Square-Toe Ballet Flats Now, when I first saw this white pair last year I almost hit purchase. I saw them on a gal I know and fell for them hard. They are really elongating which I also loved. I honestly don’t know why I hesitated so maybe I’ll fix that soon:) Also, white isn’t always the easiest color to care for but they come in eleven other colors and patterns in case you were curious. Now for the other pair that’s $100 cheaper (!), these Old Navy ones are so cute. I like that the toe is a little squared off, there’s no bow but still has the classic strap. Plus, that red color is so good and very fun. However, if red is not for you they come in six other colors. Leni Brown Suede I think I’m adding a fourth (OOPS!) to my list because wow wow I love these! I’ve always been a brown fan so these would work seamlessly with what I already own. Plus, these are real slip-on-and-go shoes. But why I really love them is the shape of the opening. Sleek and chic. I’m very impressed, Steve Madden. They also come in four other colors. Kasey Flat I know the point of a ballet flat is that it’s FLAT. But this heel is still pretty low and is the star of the whole shoe. I really really love it. Very quiet luxury but a statement, you know? They say, “I know style but I’m not in your face about it.” So yes, I want these too. And while this is just my opinion, I’ve always found Sam Edelman shoes comfortable. Oh, and they come in a cream that’s on sale for under $100. Vana Ballet Flat + Jessie Flat At some point, I’m going to get a sliver flat because it’s such an easy and fun way to make a simple outfit unexpected. And this one is so understated which I really love. Plus, the shape of this Franco Sarto flat is so beautiful. But if you love the shape but not the color it does also come in two other options. The Jessie Flat I just saw in person because my friend was in town and wore them. They are bolder statement but in such a fun way and the shape is also so good. They actually look even better in person. These are also from Freda Salvador which is an incredible brand but definitely pricey. And while these aren’t cheap by any means, they are about 50% which is a pretty big deal. Just saying in case you were interested:) Matilda Ballerinas I BOUGHT THESE!! The first thing you should know is that I’m not really a leopard print gal (shocking, I’m sure:)) But in high school/college I had a pair of Steve Madden leopard “fur” loafers that I loved. They just made any simple outfit a lot more fun. Sadly, they got too beat up and had to be trashed. This means I’ve been living sans leopard flats for over a decade now! Then for my birthday last year, my sweet (and very generous) cousin gave me a $100 gift card to Sezane. I was so excited but also so nervous to choose something which is very typical of me. When I would look I kept coming back to these flats, remembering the good times with my loafers (rip). So I did it, I bought them and they will arrive early next week! They also come in black, which I debated between, but knew my heart wanted to go for the leopard. Very excited to wear them if you can’t tell. The site does say that if you are between two shoe sizes, choose the size below. Otherwise, choose your usual size. Dream Team Mary Jane Flat This is the same shoe in two different colors because I liked them equally:) I love the pointed toe and thicker strap with the buckle. It makes it feel ever so slightly punk (?) lol. Basically, it has a little bit of edge that I’m into. Plus, that price is awesome! They also come in two other colors – light pink and silver. Mellie Mary Jane Flat Even though this one is sooo similar to the one right before, the toe on this one is more rounded. It’s totally a personal preference. I tend to prefer more of a square or a point. But a rounded toe is perfect for others. You really can’t go wrong with either…well, I guess you save $20 if you get these:) They also have two other material options. Arissa Woven Ballet Flat Now let’s get into my other favorite version of the ballet flat – the woven ballet flat! These are right up my alley! That brown leather is such a pretty, warm tone and the toe shape is a dream:) While a woven ballet flat could be considered more spring and summer, these leather ones are good easily through fall (weather permitting, of course). They also come in two other colors. Light Woven Denim Nina Flats Ever since I saw Em wearing her light blue suede over-the-knee boots (which I am saving up for) I haven’t been able to get light blue shoes out of my head. I think they are the perfect mix of fun and chic. These cuties are prefect for the spring and summer. Can’t you see it!? I think they may be a bit darker in person because of the styled photos on the site but honestly, that may make me love them more. Definitely go check out those shots because you WILL want them (or maybe don’t if you’re trying to not buy more shoes:)) They do come in five other colors but are in leather or velvet. Arissa Woven Ballet Flats + Bleached Beechwood Michaela Flats For my natural material lovers, the flats on the left are so pretty! Can’t you see yourself, strolling along in a beach town for spring break in these? Or feeling like you’re on spring break because these cuties on your feet? That’s at least where my head is at. Ha. The reviews do say that they run a little big so keep that in mind. Then the ones on the right, are also extremely cute and are ideal for the warmer days ahead. I had a pair of slip-on flats in a similar color and material and wore them so much. They went with everything! A big thumbs up and they also come in one other color. Ruby Buckle Ballet Flats + Woven Leather Ballet Flats If you’re someone who wants a woven look but something a little different/unique, the pair on the left is perfect! The color is what is unexpected about them. I think it’s just a cool color and a great shape. They also come in what they call “sunset ochre,” which is like a burnt orange-red. Also very cool. Then, for the final pair on the right, I know they are more in the “mesh ballet flat” category, but I loved them too much not to include:) The open weave is just enough to be super breathable but not too “look at my toes!” and the criss-cross straps are so freaking cute. And because my “list” is clearly endless, two of these (especially the white ones) are on it. Oh, those also come in two other colors, and the reviews say they run big. So while my ballet dancing days are far behind me, I will be cosplaying a ballerina for probably most of the year and beyond. There were also some stunning satin options, but even for me, those felt like they would get ruined after about one wear. But if you love the idea of that, these were my favorite:) Talk about looking like a ballerina! Ok, happy ballet flat shopping. Love you, mean it.
