Here we are – the transitional months where our bodies are so confused about what to wear to be comfortable all day long. It’s warm during the day but not hot, but could be hot if you are in the sun in the middle of the day, but probably too cold to leave the house in tiny shorts or skirts. And nobody but me has any color on our legs yet (obviously, mine is from a bottle) so people just aren’t ready for that level of exposure. So I shopped and tried on a bunch of lightweight comfortable trousers and found a few that I feel really good about recommending. Very Comfortable Old Navy Linen Pants On my recent “Oh wait, Old Navy is so awesome” discovery, these linen pants were a big winner. With the right casual but elevated top and shoes, you can take these crazy comfortable pants and make them look/feel like you really care about your appearance. I bought this sweater at Free People because it’s that perfect slouchy, heavy knit that is roomy and boxy. It lands at the right place for me, is a good color, and feels high quality. It’s perfect for over a t-shirt at night in the summer (it’s a breezy knit so it has weight but it’s not hot if you know what I mean) and it doesn’t cling anywhere. It feels very throw-on-able. Old Navy Trousers I found these trousers at Old Navy which again, look so much more expensive than they are. They are your basic cool, straight-legged, boy-cut with a cuff situation which I like to dress down, but could easily be worn with a cute blazer for an office job. The white linen trench is from Target and is awesome, a white T-shirt from Madewell, a very old Madewell bandana, and Kelsi Dagger slides. Lightweight Parachute Pants This style of pant is having quite the moment, but most of them I found way too baggy for me. But since these are cropped I liked them more. I still like a slimmer fit for pants on my figure (LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE RETURN OF CAPRIS WHICH IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING RIGHT NOW!!!). But for those of you who like a wider fit, these are great and cool. The sweatshirt though is awesome and I want it in more colors (from Free People and I find that I wear it most days because it’s so cozy, flattering, and easy to layer without being fitted or tight anywhere). Scarf by Clare V :) Cargo Pants Because It’s 1997 Again These pants are SOLID. They are Target, y’all, and look way more high-end. They are thicker than some of the others (so less “lightweight” and more medium weight) and the pockets are really flattering (I find that front-seamed square pockets like this are very slimming and make your tummy look flatter if you are into that). I rolled them up so that they were more cropped, which I felt better in. Blouse from Anthro, hat is Brixton and of course, those are my Birks! I thought this was a super cute and appropriate spring outfit (comfortable in every way, and yet looks like I still care). The Really Good Spulrge She’s really going for it with that smile!! I have no idea what I was laughing about – so awkward. But the outfit is a solidly cute spring assemble that I could totally wear to run errands or go to meetings. These pants are Frank & Eileen so they are far more splurgy. Are they great? YEP. And if you have the budget you’ll wear them forever. They wash well, the cut is so good (lower waisted though, which is my preferred cut) and the hem is unfinished so it gives it a bit of youth. My favorite, as far as what I’d wear the most often, is the linen stripe pant from Old Navy and these from Frank & Eileen. Both are so breathable and light, comfortable and cute plus check all the “lightweight trousers” boxes.
Read MoreIn another episode of “I Go to Stores and Try on Every Single Thing In Order to Show You My Favorites,” today I present to you a little local store called Target. Now, as you know I had an extremely wonderful partnership for over 8 years that grew, morphed, shifted, and changed annually (typical to digital/social media). While this post is completely unsponsored and we are not currently in contract, you can take the girl out of Target but you can’t take Target out of the girl (they were simply too good to me + their stuff is just so good + an unmatched retail experience). I will say that in the past I have found way more fashion at Target than I did this trip – I think their attempt to appeal to Gen Z is leaving some of us cuspers confused, but I think that more of a “me problem”. Anyway, Kaitlin, Gretch, and I went for 2 hours and I tried on a billion things. Here is what I found and loved (that I felt good in). I may need to get an office job – all of these cute short suit sets (with vests) are selling me on a life outside of athleisure and mud clothes (I bought this one from Old Navy and LOVE IT). Now, this vest has more of a shape than the straight-shaped Old Navy set that I bought (and prefer) but the color and material of this light green set is so nice. I didn’t see a jacket that matched so I paired it with the best white linen coat that I ever did see. It’s a linen trench that I’ve worn a few times now and does exactly what it professes to do – give you that nice spring layer in a really casual and chic way. Black And White Knit Set How cute is this??? Again, another separate set (not a dress) but so comfortable and stretchy in the best of ways. I’m wearing an XL skirt which is actually totally fine (not sure if a medium would be tight or not, TBH). I would style it totally differently (it needs some accessorizing for sure) but I think it’s very chic and cool. A Great Button Up And Cargo Pants If you like boxy men’s-style button ups this is a great one (rounded in front, cute front pocket). Then while in the market for trouser pants (cargo counts) I tried on these, cuffed them and I was pretty darn happy. While I wore these exact pants in high school circa 1995, those front and side pockets were flattering then and are still flattering now. A SHOCKINGLY Good Jumpsuit As you know the EHD team has always believed in jumpsuits (led by the jumpsuit queen Emily Bowser) but you guys this one is EXTRA GOOD (especially for being so affordable). The pattern makes it just so darn flattering (I find that some cling too much to my boobs and other areas where I prefer looseness. I’m not into a jumpsuit that’s trying to give me an hourglass shape). So I’ve been picky, opting for the more boxy/roomier jumpsuits (like Frank & Eileen, which is still my go-to but 5 times the price of this). This one is in collaboration with Future Collective and it is just so cute. It’s roomy but with a drawstring should you want to cinch her up. I was immediately sold and I’ve worn it many times both dressed up and down since I bought it. Another Denim Shirt Dress – With Pockets! I didn’t let myself buy this because I have a lot of these, but it’s a good one if you like the oversized denim shirt dress look. Just so easy to wear, with cute front pockets and side pockets (that don’t add bulk, which I appreciate). Also, those New Balances are the sneakers of the summer – at the airport yesterday I saw 5 women wearing them – FIVE. I mean, they are strangely flattering, cute, and graphic (not Target, obviously). A Denim Jumpsuit I know I JUST said that I don’t love jumpsuits that try to give you an hourglass figure (it’s antithetical to the utilitarian purpose of the workman suit), but this one had this nice blousy top portion that looked almost tucked into the waistband. I cuffed the legs because the legs were a bit overwhelming. I’ll be honest that I think this one would work better for ladies with more petite ladies. I liked it enough to show you, but I knew that I would opt for one of my roomier jumpsuits should I be in a jumpsuit mood so I skipped this one. Another Great Linen Shirt/Short Set For beach, office, brunch – as long as it’s daytime or casual, sets like these win (I like them with flip flops, sneakers, slides, or a pointy heel, these mules are too basic for this outfit). It’s just good. The only reason I didn’t buy this top and bottom was because I preferred the pink/white stripe of the Old Navy boyfriend set sold here and here. But this pink and taupe set is super cute, too. A YELLOW SUIT WHAT IS HAPPENING!!!! I literally laughed when I saw this set on the rack, saying out loud “Who wears a bright yellow suit??,” but I tried it on because the fabric felt nice. Then as I turned around to show Kaitlin and Gretchen how it looked and all of us were like, oh shit – YOU WEAR YELLOW!! Now, I do think it looks better on me with a spray tan (representing here) and I’d wear it with a more casual T-shirt, but I’m proud to say that I’m now the owner of a yellow summer suit!! Move Over, Kate Hudson!!?? Good High-Waisted Wide Leg Trousers Undeniably a great shape and a really thick denim which is nice to keep everything in place. These pants are kinda “sailor style” in fit. I loved how they looked, but knew that I wouldn’t wear them enough. The top is from Free People (Farm Rio) and perhaps I needed to size down in it because it’s a bit overwhelming (huge shoulder pads). Clearly sets and jumpsuits are a thing this summer and we are absolutely here for it. Thanks, Target for delivering some dope outfits (and if you missed the same style try-on post from Old Navy head here).
Read MoreIhadn’t been to Old Navy in years, mostly because it’s not at the mall that I frequent and Brian buys most of the kids’ clothes at Target. WELL… NO LONGER. I was honestly blown away by how good some of the stuff was. I, of course, vowed to buy NOTHING because I don’t have the lifestyle anymore to need as many different clothes, especially nice work clothes but not only did I find some great pieces for those of you who do leave the house for a job where you need/want to look nice, but there were a few pieces that I literally couldn’t not buy. If you want to read my philosophy of consuming RE fast fashion it’s at the end. But for now, here are some standout pieces that I found. A Standout Linen Shirt (And Wide Leg Jeans) What I don’t need in my life is another striped linen shirt, but for $40 I couldn’t believe how good this was (and my other one from 2 years ago is a little too snug right now so I justified this one quickly). I’m wearing a small, FYI, so it’s pretty oversized. The jeans were so good – high-waisted, wide-leg and I cuffed them because I don’t love the puddle look that many people are into right now. But I LOVED these jeans and if I had a job where I left the house needing to impress anyone I would get these. My Maxi Skirt Formula IRL A cute cotton skirt (elastic waist, flattering tummy) and a boxy sweatshirt. I’m not totally selling it in these photos but we all agreed that this was such an easy/cute spring outfit to wear. I skipped the skirt since I do like showing off my legs when it’s warm out, but bought the sweatshirt because it’s boxy and super comfy (the color looks icky under their fluorescent lighting, but its a really nice olive). The Cutest Striped Linen Set Ever I’m taking the EHD team to Mexico in May (you know, for a very serious brainstorming session) and y’all I’LL BE WEARING THIS. This shirt is an XL so I ordered a medium, but the linen is soft and flowy, the shorts were so comfy and cute and as a set (with sandals) it is so cute (and doesn’t read as pajamas at all, which I think many sets can). I would probably style this with my Birkenstocks and something tied around my waist. This comes in a lot of colors, but we agreed that this pink was perfect for me ;) The top of the shorts is a light elastic (not too tight, doesn’t cut in). While this is not the suit for me I still thought it was super super cute for someone who might not need as much support and might not have the budget for my dumb splurgy suits (I’m EXTREMELY picky and curvy for being so short so I’m a TA3 gal – just got the muscle tank suit and OMG, I want it in every color). Again, if you have larger ladies this will not be supportive enough, but if you are smaller up top the shape is so cute, it’s double-layered so you feel more secure. I just liked the shape of the tank, the zipper makes it flirty and cute, and the color POPS if you are still in your Barbie season. I Bought This Entire Outfit And I Feel Zero Shame While I do NOT have an office job, this linen jacket and vest was so good and affordable that both Kaitlin and I bought it. The vest is boxy and cool (and looks VERY expensive). I can’t stress this enough – the cut of it is far better than most other vests I’ve ever tried that try to make it too body-con and it feels either cheesy or hugs in the wrong places. This is more of a “boy cut” that is straight and very simple. SO GOOD. The jacket, too – double-breasted and perfectly tailored and straight. The boyfriend jeans were EXCELLENT and I’ve worn them 3 times since I got them last week. They were loose in the right ways that boyfriend jeans should be, with an excellent wash and I just feel so cute in them. Another EXCELLENT spring/summer suit for those of you who want to look professional and cool, while not being crazy hot. This isn’t how I would style it (the tank, which I loved and bought) was too high-necked for this but the jacket and shorts (on sale) were great. Also, the lighting in these stores SUCK. Matching Summer Set With The Best Pull-On Shorts YET I bought two pairs of these pull-on shorts (one in white, one in denim) because they are such a good cut, so comfortable up top (doesn’t cut in to make a waist, just sits nicely up there with slight elastic in the back). The stitched pockets on the front are very flattering and flair out in the most perfect way. And yes, such a great summer-weight sweater with holes. I obviously tried it on in the olive, too, and sized up to a medium in both so you could see the difference (just slightly bigger). I bought small (the white pair above) but might size up for the days when I just feel like I want everything loose. I absolutely LOVED this quarter zip and went online to buy the green one below in a small (only had white in store in small and my life is too dirty for white). It’s so soft, has a great shape, pockets with zippers – THE WORKS. The shorts have a liner and a nice fit at the top (not too tight). I’m going to have to break up with my $90 Lululemon shorts that I still really love but for $19 (just $10 if they’re still on sale!) these are just so cute (and since I’m not a performance athlete). Here it is in the green – the set I ended up ordering. It’s so cute and comfortable and while It’s not flashy, I felt pulled together. I’m not properly selling this windbreaker in this shot but it’s really good – the fabric is stiff enough to not look cheap and to keep its shape, and it’s cropped with buttons, pockets, drawstrings – all the goods. It’s the perfect spring layer that is easy to layer even over a sweatshirt (and yes, I bought this one). Also, the green ribbed tights were very comfy, with a thick band and side pockets. Forever laughing that my team made me recreate some Gigi Hadid in biker shorts looking at her phone moment, but these two are really good. An oversized super thin and drapey denim shirt (that is also excellent if you are a sweater around the waist person like I am) and really affordable. Oh, and these are thick biker shorts (not too thick, but thick enough that it doesn’t show everything underneath). I brought home both. Another excellent shirt dress that has a cute pocket, pleating in the back, and pockets. This one is a bit see-through so you might want a slip. It’s a great shape and feels like an updated classic. A Triangle Tent Dress For All The Spring/Summer Days Another shirt dress, this time super wide with an A-line shape that is just so easy to throw on. This might be too casual for many offices, but for those hotter days it’s kinda all you can wear in the summer. The pattern was cute, but it’s the cut that was so great. Excellent Baggy Jeans This was my “woah, these are so cute” look. These are oddly floppy jeans, in a good way. Like they are fitted up top but then really flowy (probably the word I was looking for) and fun to wear. These are petite (shorter) which I loved as it’s more of the look that I like. I wish they didn’t have holes but at that price, I love them for the days when you want to wear jeans but not tight or thick denim. A Good Layering Cargo Jacket Gretchen and Kailtin said “You will wear this jacket every day” and they aren’t wrong. It’s structured but roomy so it’s great to layer even over sweatshirts. It has multiple pockets, a fun collar, and it’s just classic in all the ways. And yes, those are the boyfriend jeans again – so good. Re my fast fashion philosophy. Not everyone can afford to buy from the brands that are making beautiful clothes with the best sustainable practices. I wish that was different. So if your budget doesn’t allow for those pieces, then “fast fashion” tends to be one of the main options. Yes, there is of course secondhand but that can be limited depending on your location and even size. And everyone deserves to look and feel good. With all that said, just because something is considered fast fashion doesn’t mean it’s automatically going to end up in a landfill. I’ve had some of those pieces for years and that is the hope of this post, to help us all find really good, affordable pieces that we’ll want to wear for a long time. As with everything we consume, we need to do so mindfully and do the best we can with what we have.
Read MoreIsang this dress’ praises a few weeks ago as I was planning my spring break packing list. I’m happy to report that not only did I wear this 3 nights during spring break (in Kauai, 70 degrees at night after long days of being in the sun and with sticky sunscreen), but I saw TWO different women in Hawaii wearing it too. It got me thinking, is this dress great on most people? Could it be the sisterhood of the traveling dress? Gretchen had already bought it, so I told the rest of the team they could grab one and we’d do an experiment to see if perhaps this is the perfect spring/summer dress???? And FYI I’ve washed it 3 times, hung dry or spun dry, and it has held up and drapes really well – not all wrinkled or misshaped which sometimes you can get with a really affordable dress. I think there is enough poly in it to give it that seersucker look (at least the green stripe) which makes it look great without steaming. Definitely a dress you’d happily wear after eating a huge burrito or dealing with normal bloat, FYI. It’s sooo comfortable. Ok, ladies – what did you think????? But first I’ll remind you of my initial thoughts… The Green Striped One From my fashion post: “This dress is the real winner of the season. It’s from Target and while I love the idea of Target clothes I do find that sometimes their cuts aren’t great on me or the fabric is just meh. This is lightweight (looks heavier than it is), has a seersucker vibe that lends itself to being casual, doesn’t need to be steamed, and has that cute gathering detail at the front but nothing on the back so it gives you a sense of the waist with extreme waist comfort!!!!! Might be too warm for extreme humidity, but it’s absolutely coming with me for nighttime casual dinners. I’m so comfortable and I feel really cute (add a trendy bag to take it down a notch in the mom category).” This dress! I saw it at Target a few days before Em styled it for her Spring Break Outfits post, but they only had the dark blue version in my size. I tried it on and I liked it well enough, but knew I would LOVE the green stripe, so I went ahead and ordered it. To my pleasant surprise, Em showed up to the shoot with said green dress and I felt so validated by my decision! I love the way it drapes, with slits along the sides for a leg to peek out, plus the front waist is cinch-able, so I can pull a little shape but keep the back hanging loose. And POCKETS!!! I tried it in both L and XL but opted to keep the bigger size because it’s slightly longer and reviews say it’ll shrink some in the wash. I paired it with my other “new favorite” Madewell jacket and some old (un-linkable) favorites: a round canvas Baggu bag, vintage wooden sandals and some brown sunnies! The Blue Striped One This dress is SO comfy and I was stoked when I found out it has POCKETS!!! The blue and white pinstripe is a classic pattern I’ve always loved and I’ll always love this look with gold accessories. I’m wearing a small and I pulled the lil strings on the side tighter to give it a little more shape (love that this adjusts BTW). Plus this lil slit was cute – wanted to show off my janky little ankle that I sprain all the time (this is its good side). I feel like Gwenette Paltrow on vacation which is not a bad thing to feel like for only $30!! The White One I’m gonna be real: I did not think I was going to like this dress on my body! The sizing chart left a lot to be desired – my measurements ranged from “medium” to “XXL” – so I figured that parts of the dress would cling to my hips and bust. NOT SO, MY FRIENDS! I split the difference and ordered the XL and I am SO STOKED with the fit. I love the drape (it’s hard to find things that actually drape without bunching up somewhere!) and I’m so glad I got it in white! It’s been SO FUN to dress up and down and probably the only piece in my closet that feels appropriate for a museum and a beach, which is a pretty tall order. I’m wearing it with some clogs here, but I also LOVE it with a baseball hat and sneakers, some flat sandals and big glasses, or with a few pops of color. More than anything, this dress makes me feel a little cooler than I am, which is really all that matters:) it’s nice to wear things that actually make you feel good about yourself, you know?! (PS. This color/fabric will come rumpled and you will need to steam it. Still worth it. I promise!!) The Navy One Dare I say I chose the least “springy” option but I just felt like it suited me best. Actually, the navy fabric is a little thinner than the green stripe one! So here is what I’ll say, I think this is a super cute and unbelievably comfortable dress. However, I don’t think it’s totally my style but hopefully, the way I styled it does it justice if it’s yours! I wanted to really mix it up in a classic “EHD style” way and throw a striped long-sleeved shirt under it. I know it’s still chilly in a lot of places so this could be an easy way to make it a little warmer and fun. And while you can surely dress this cutie up, I liked the idea of pairing it with a cool, casual sneaker. I also wanted to add a little structure and pattern so I threw on my beloved Clare V fanny pack with its checkered strap. TBF, it’s the only purse I wear these days so it really wasn’t a choice as much as my only option but I stand by it:) I also wanted to show you what it looked like without the striped top and then with a classic baseball hat. Three casual looks, one throw-on-and-go, easy breezy dress. I’m in a medium but we were told it shrinks a good amount so I would consider sizing up! So there you have it! All our thoughts that will hopefully help you decide whether you were on the purchase fence or simply looking for a great, comfy, affordable spring dress.
Read MoreAs a proud “apple-shaped person” (bigger on top, smaller on bottom) I love the look of the smaller top with the big flow skirt but it’s not a combination that I feel my best in (as you know I like my tiny shorts/skirts or tight jeans and blousy tops) so I just kinda never thought to really try a maxi skirt. But recently I tried one on with a vintage sweatshirt and I was like “Hey, look at that! I can do this too”. It’s so comfortable, easy to wear, and perfect for transitional seasons (aka spring or maybe when our legs are tanned enough LOLOLOL – my legs are always orange, don’t worry!!) The Great (one of my favorite brands, albeit highly splurgy) and Claire V (same) always nail this look – the casual on top and more feminine on bottom, and one of my best friends works for The Great and styles things to be just so effortlessly cool (shout out to Suzanne). Here is what she does (that I fully copy). The top of choice leans more “masculine,” maybe a crew neck sweatshirt, a vintage band T-shirt, etc, but can’t be too bulky (because the bottom is so voluminous). Again, this could be a vintage t-shirt or a ripped sweatshirt. Sure you can wear a ruffly blouse with this skirt, but that looks more formal, less every day (IMHO). THEN, Front tuck that top. You want to see the waistline so it’s a tad bit more defined. Wear with the “wrong shoe” i.e. sneakers, combat boots, Birkenstocks. While the inclination might be to wear a “girly” and flowy skirt with heels or cute flats (and obviously do WHATEVER YOU WANT) if you are trying to dress this down and look more “everyday effortless” then copy what all these ladies do. And listen (without laughing, but I find fashion hilarious so go ahead and LOL) looking “comfortable” is IN these days (to some of us, thank god) so now is your chance to not have to wear heels (still hard for me quarantine). I hadn’t really planned on “modeling” this outfit (Kaitlin literally just caught me in what she thought looked cute and snapped a few photos) so I might have styled it even better TBH or added some layered chains/taken off the jacket, but you get it. Keep it casual and a little messy/masculine on top (or a simple muscle or ribbed tank will do) and then easy breezy and full/ruffly on the bottom. Add a baseball hat for the full “I’m a celebrity that is trying to not get noticed in Erewhon” effect. Lol. Here is the effortlessly cool Suzanne who helped style the two of us for a fashion shoot a handful of years ago. How cute yet easy is that outfit?! Casual Top + Fun Skirt + “Wrong Shoe” = A cool and comfortable look. This is the outfit I was referring to in the intro and boy was I comfortable:) I also wanted to throw this look in because while it’s not a super flowy shirt and is more of a midi, the rules still apply! Think how cute this would still be with a pair of Converse or boots. My team curated a bunch of skirts should you be into this transitional vibe (hopefully you have something in your closet already). And for those of you/us who still like a little lift, I love my New Balances with the light platform or go for a platform slide (like this one) or Teva. Wave Denim Maxi Skirt This one may not be super flowy but it is wavy:) The details of this skirt are so cool and honestly, it does look pretty comfortable. Plus, it’s from Farm Rio which we can attest for their awesome quality. Linen-Blend Tiered Midi Skirt Would you guess this was from Abercrombie & Fitch? The pattern is perfect to really play with the masc/fem mix of pieces and it’s great that while the pattern is busy the color is quiet so it’s not too loud if that’s what you prefer. It also comes in other patterns and colors too! Gwyneth Slip Skirt How great is that bold yet casual stripe? The linen fabric is so pretty and versatile. The Linen Wrap Skirt Another neutral but bold patterned skirt! That extra-long tie is also very cool and think how fun this would be paired with a vintage band shirt and leather jacket?? Elevated Embroidered Maxi Skirt Talk about a whimsical spring skirt! It not only has an eyelet trim but it has a lace section too. Beautiful and easy to throw on with a fun crewneck sweatshirt! Green Margarita Skirt Another more slender option but that print is so chic and playful! Just think, during the day throw on a slouchy t-shirt with comfy shoes, then at night dress it up with something more fitted and a cute heel or fancy sandal. It’s also from EHD’s newest favorite online shop, Tuckernuck. Linen Tie-Front Maxi Skirt Here’s a fuller shirt with such a cute paper bag waist! Plus, as you can see it has pockets. Did we mention that it’s only $36?? Petra Linen Midi Skirt This midi is a really fun easy one that not only has pockets but is high-waisted if that’s what you prefer:) The Tilda Maxi Slip Skirt Something that we are not mad that is trending is the long silk slip skirt. It’s both casual but is so so easy to dress up. A piece that is good all year long. Bubble Bliss Skirt The idea of wearing a long bubble skirt sounds pretty freaking fun! This one also has a smocked back but maximum comfort. Effortless and playful:) Gwyneth Slip Skirt As one of J.Crew’s bestsellers, I think it’s safe to say this one is pretty great. The polka dot is awesome but if you prefer a solid don’t worry, they have seven other colors to choose from! Happy Comfortable Spring, y’all :)
Read MoreIfeel like I reach peak “mom” frequently these days (I just bought a vintage stair basket, sooo…), but perhaps most recently when I blurted out to my team “I’m really into finding cool windbreakers right now” when they were all discussing legit fashion. While I often have “coat confusion” (the disorder where you can’t decide on what type of coat you’ll need and want for the day) once spring comes and I’m walking those dogs, all I want is a light layer on the top half of my body. Just something to separate my skin and the elements without being tight like a T-shirt. While these aren’t for date night or going to get you that job you want, if you also have an outside hobby then maybe you could use a windbreaker or light spring jacket as well. I snagged a few from my closet, shopped a bit, and headed out to the coast with my team to shoot (LOL, just joking we were out there shooting a big patio shoot and I knew that we’d have 2-3 hours of “too directly overhead sun” so we planned some filler shoots while out there). We were on the Washington Bay Coast and if nothing else I hope you like the scenery. It was sooo pretty. The Navy “Throw-On And Go” With Pockets This one is nice and roomy in the pits (just how I like them) so that it can be thrown over and layer well. It’s my new favorite. It has multiple pockets that close (stop it with the side pockets where things fall out easily) and a little gather to break up the boxiness. Here I’m modeling last year’s Madewell shorts (these are oversized and I roll them up) with some cute 70s-inspired Bombas and my new strangely flattering New Balances (the shape of the shoe when you look down is legit very cute). A Colorblocked (And Weightless) Cutie I think there needs to be more anoraks or windbreakers that are colorblocked (I only found this one in person but below I’ve linked some really cute ones). This one was (and is still) on sale and is very thin (you can even see your shirt underneath). I love the shape and I actually love that it’s so thin, adding virtually NO weight, just the tiniest layer. I paired it with my favorite summer workout shorts (I also swim in them and have them in three colors, built-in underwear, etc), from Lululemon (size up, I’m wearing an 8 here). These shorts are so comfortable, with a wide waistband that never cuts in, and yet they are cut to flair out a bit on the sides and be more flat on the front = exactly what you want your shorts to do IMHO. A Lightly Blue And Dare I Say Peplum Number? This jacket is new to me and adds a bit more substance and warmth with two light layers. Front roomy pockets house my phone, headphones, and doggy bags. But the little ruffle/peplum bottom is pretty darn cute and why I got it. I tried it with baggier pants but it was too “big over big” so it’s better with tighter leggings (These are old Lulu leggings). And those slightly platform New Balances are sooooo cute (and while I know it’s more “in” to wear this with baggy pants, I’m not into that look and love them with either leggings or shorts). The Daily Spring Easy Jacket I’ve had this one for a couple of years and while it leans towards a jacket (a bit too thick to be a windbreaker) I find that I do wear it a lot when I want some warmth without the bulk (and has ample pockets for dog walking accessories). I like that the collar comes up high and the “boob flap” (technical name, I’m sure) adds some architectural interest. It’s splurgier and I frankly wish it came in a bright color but it’s good :) Here are a few that I love from the internet that are more current (and what I would buy if I needed a new one or two). Crucial ingredients are pockets and armpit space (I’m sensitive to this since my boobs are big and I hate feeling trapped in a coat I think more than most people) which lends to its ability to layer. That is all of my windbreaker philosophy now! Have a great rest of your weekend.
Read MoreThey are called “PG-rated” dresses – easy to wear, easy to parent in (i.e. family-friendly), modest (if you are into that), and still cute (and great for church if that’s your thing, especially for my LDS readers:)) Less Tinder date, perhaps office-appropriate but mostly just nice for us to throw on to feel good and comfortable. Now these are different than summer dresses that are likely thinner, strapless, shorter, etc – but for spring dresses we want them to be more transition-y, not super thin fabric, and with a sleeve and some length. I tried a few and then we rounded up a bunch. Also perhaps good for Easter???? This one is a long sleeve shirt dress and that pattern is very forgiving and easy to wear. Would be cute with sneakers or flip-flops, too. The fabric is a bit thicker than cotton (think closer to a thin canvas?) which felt nicely structured. Now this one is certainly more fun, in such great colors, and has a great pattern with the puff sleeves. Plus I love what that waist cinch is doing:) Still a new favorite for how affordable it is and how well it drapes (that gathering is only in the front, not the back which means it brings you in but doesn’t cling). Slam dunk. Also, headbands are back (which is GREAT since apparently I only highlight my hair twice a year now and I’m DESEPARATE – happening this Saturday. Yay!). This one is from Frank & Eileen and is so great. It is on the pricey side but the quality is awesome, the drape is good, I love the distressed hem, and since it’s a shirtdress it’s the ultimate throw-on-and-go outfit. But when I want to add a little shape and pattern, I like to wrap one of my flannels around my waist. Now here are 14 more dresses that I think are great for the “family-friendly” spring dress category:) Mad Love Denim Midi Dress It’s no surprise that I love this dress. It’s denim, has big sleeves, and some cool details. I also like the buttons in the front because you have options on how much skin you want to show. Plus it can easily go from day to night. I think boots like the ones she has on look great but you could easily throw on some heeled boots to dress it up. Aurelia Crepe Maxi Dress A great pattern, is so flowy, and has pockets. What more could you ask for an easy, cute dress? Chambray Mabel Maxi Dress This dress has “easy spring” written all over it. The tiers give it a little more interest than your average shirtdress, the sleeves are great (and it’s nice that they are slightly cropped), and I love a collar. The website also shows the model with a cute belt around her waist if that’s a look you’d prefer! Amaryllis Floral Louisa Midi Dress If you are looking for a floral spring dress I really like this one. The red is so fun and again, you know I love a puff sleeve. Plus that almost Victorian-esque collar is so good! This would be great for any party like a baby shower. Crinkle Gauze Lace Midi Dress For under $100, I think this one is great and olive green is a great neutral. All of the lacey details really make it special. How cute are the scalloped hems? Tan and Green Striped Chessie Dress This dress is so cool. It’s “springy” but modern. The color combo is chic and I really love the alternating fabrics with the one cuff and pocket. Plus it comes with a belt so you can show off your waist or not. Both options are great. I think this is a cool office look too:) Off-White Flora Tapestry Lenzing™ Ecovero™ Euroflax™ Maxi Dress While this dress/pattern definitely feels super resort-wear to me, I think it’s real pretty. Caitlin on our team wears Farm Rio (this brand) all year round and she always looks awesome. So if you love a more detailed pattern then I heavily support this one. Plus those sleeves and scalloped trim are beautiful. Puff Sleeve Belted Midi Dress Oh, hey Target! That’s right, this romantic dress is under $50 and also comes in a bright pink if that’s more your speed. This feels more “special occasion-y” to me but could easily be worn as an everyday look with the right shoes and accessories. Pleated Skirt Fit And Flare Dress Eloquii is a new to me brand that is very size-inclusive and has a really great inventory, BTW. This print is so fun and I love the pleating a lot. Chic and cool. Open-Neck Smock Long Dress While this dress shape isn’t my favorite on my apple-shaped bod, I think it’s so cute! Those blues feel really fresh, the way the stripes are played with is fun, and the sleeves are pretty. Frances Dress 3 I have this dress and I love how casual and easy it is to wear. Now, it is thinly lined so it wouldn’t actually be great if you wanted a good amount of warmth. Otherwise 10/10! Smocked-Waist Midi Dress This one from Madewell is so simple but looks so pretty at the same time. The cinching at the waist is nice and wide which is great, and the cap sleeve is really cute. Plus you know, pockets:) Button-Front Utility Shirtdress I like this one from Madewell, too. It’s a romantic, utility-style dress. Right up my alley:) All those pockets look really cool and since this is a satin fabric, you don’t have to worry about any bulkiness. Puff Sleeve Midi Dress For my final pick, I really like this affordable ($53) puff sleeve foral number. With a pattern like this, you don’t need much else to look put together which is always a bonus:) Hope this helps anyone who has been looking for cute, easy, (but more modest) spring dresses.
Read MoreIam of the demographic that feels frustrated when what is “in” looks decidedly bad on many of us (IMHO). So many of my friends are with me, thinking “Wait, what pants are we actually supposed to wear now that skinny jeans are ‘less cool'” (Although rumor has it that skinny capris are coming back ladies!!! Thanks to Meghan of Harry and Meghan!). While I can see with my internet reading eyes that baggy dad jeans are in, y’all I’m not convinced they should be. Let me be very clear: YOU DO YOU (obviously). And I see Athena Calderone pull off the baggy jeans trend SO WELL, but that’s not how I feel when I am in MOST of them. So I had intentions to wait this one out and not engage, wear my favorite athleisure, and not leave the house until 2025. But lo and behold, I’ve had all these fashion partnerships just for social which kinda forced me to try on some new jeans and I’m happy to report that some of these are both “in” and look good. MAMAS STILL GOT IT (???) These jeans are REAL CUTE. The cut and the width of the bell are so fun and the frayed bottom keeps it in 2024. They are still fitted in the crotch and upper thigh which gives your frame a modicum of shape if that’s your thing. The waist is pretty stretchy, FYI :) My much younger team (who dresses more hip and cool than I do) loved these jeans on me and I agreed that they looked pretty darn good for not being “skinny”. They are medium-rise (not crazy high) and the waist is the perfect amount of constriction and comfort. They hold their shape really well and the wash is a great color. I like to wear them with a little heel versus chunky cross-trainers (which I know is in, but again not my thing). BTW that sweater is SO CUTE and a really cute cut – it’s cropped, comes in at the waist in a really great way, has a dropped sleeve, and is nice and lightweight. Here’s another shot of these Madewells that just launched. They have a bunch of new denim and wanted me to try these. FYI I never post anything I don’t like on me, even if it’s super cute, and yes even if I’m being paid to promote a brand. If I don’t feel good in it, I go back to the store and find something I do feel good in. My Favorite New Cut I was a massive fan of the Cali denim from Madewell (and still am). And these are their new cut that has a very similar cut and stretch, but with a little kick-out crop at the bottom (thus being able to claim that it’s not a skinny jean). Y’all this new cut is SO GOOD – I feel so great in them and they are slimming through the leg (which skinny jeans did so well) but they are cropped and kick out into a bell at the bottom thus giving it a more modern shape. I got this pair for the partnership then bought the lighter denim because I think I’ll be wearing these A LOT. Again, they have a really good constriction/comfort waist which flattens without being so uncomfortable (like Levis that have no stretch and you can’t really sit down in them). The Cutest Denim Shirt Dress Y’all. I love my loose chambray dresses, but this one (which is thicker but not crazy thick or too hot) is so cute. It’s definitely a “throw on and look professional/cool instantly while still being comfortable”. The cut really mimics a men’s shirt (the sides come up and the sleeves are dropped). I wore these clogs with this dress for the Madewell partnership, but I think I’d likely wear it with sneakers or something a little more delicate (like my kitten-heeled boots). And you guys better screenshot this immediately – this may be the first non-spray-tanned legs I’ve shown here (although TBH I still had a little bit on from 4 days prior). My daily cold plunging is really screwing with my weekly spray/self-tanning addiction (feel free to write that on my gravestone). It’s a huge life challenge that I’m currently trying to overcome! These jeans are new, cool, from The Great, and have the perfect bleach frayed bottoms and button fly. Splurgy but I love them. The top is perfect for spring – almost sweatshirt weight, but a little lighter. These are the famous Colette pants in denim from Anthropologie that come in a million washes and colors (and multiple people in my life have told me they are their favorite jeans ever). I get the hype now and I can tell you the #1 reason why they are so popular – front square pockets are really really flattering. Also, that blouse is so cute. I mean, this is a clear winner here, and my crotch agrees (so much room – you can even sit in these pants!!). Last year for our rugs launch I splurged on the original version of these (which should get credit, from Nili Lotan, the famous Shon pants are incredible and I have them in blue cotton and khaki, too). But I don’t think I even put them on the blog because they are so expensive. So, we’ve been eagerly awaiting a more affordable version these are good and y’all, not all are good. BTW Kaitlin LOVES these Everlane jeans that keep selling out, but the point is – these Anthropologie pants are SO GOOOOOOOOD. Somehow the bow-legged shape is still flattering because it still has a shape (not just baggy) and plays with proportions. And there we go :) My favorite new cropped/kick out, my new more affordable barrel-shaped jeans, and super comfy and cool (and maybe not as flattering) frayed bottom jeans.
Read MoreIhave a “family vacation” philosophy that I’d love to share if you are into random internet people telling you what to do with your lives and how to raise your kids (…most people LOVE THAT). I learned this the hard way: When your kids are infants (under one), go wherever you want because they are mostly mobile and they don’t care/know what is happening. When your kids are toddlers (5 and younger), lower all expectations down to ZERO, get in your car, rent a house near any sort of body of water (crucial ingredient) with another family of similar-aged kids whose parents you enjoy enough to commiserate with and just chill (camping with another family is PERFECT). Do whatever you can to not have to get in a car to start your day, avoid hotel rooms so you don’t get stuck in a “nap trap” sitting in the dark, avoid nice restaurants because toddlers know how to ruin your good time and hell, even avoid going to a city where you want to experience “culture” because you might not actually get to enjoy much of it. I’m sure a million of you will balk at this because I’m sure many of you loved your city + toddler experience. But when we went to Australia FOR THREE WEEKS for Brian’s work, the kids were 3 months and 2 years old. We barely left the house due to nap trap, they ruined every martini we tried to get at our 5 pm dinners and came home saying it was mostly a waste of a lot of money. Same thing when we went for 2 weeks to New York for work around that same time (we went for my work). We were so exhausted and drained and everything was on their terms. Save your $$$. The toddler years require too much work and they are too unpredictable. Now, when they become school-aged and you want a “vacation” (different than traveling) meet them where they are at and hone in on your shared interests. For us right now, it’s nature, somewhere with water and sun, a sense of adventure, few crowds, and somewhere that avoids screentime for all of us. But for now, our whole family is very happy when we are outside (swimming, zip lining, snorkeling, hiking, animals, horses, farm visits, sitting by a lake and reading, more swimming, etc). Ideally somewhere with delicious food too. Furthermore… (Yes, I’m still blabbing about my philosophy, I’m a Virgo y’all and an Enneagram 7 so I like to seriously plan my fun). I plan every day the same – the first half of the day is super active (moving our bodies somehow) and the second half of the day is inactive (reading, chilling, reading, sipping on something while kids swim). Last year we were able to go to Costa Rica (far exceeded our super high expectations) and this year we are headed to Kauai (never been so excited). I planned our entire itinerary, including activities, in JULY, like a real mom-boss/psychopath (I’m very grateful to be able to do this with our kids). But last year I crapped the bed on my Costa Rica wardrobe. I was fine for our rainforest mountain hiking/ziplining days but didn’t bring the right lightweight clothes for the super humid and hot beach time. I felt very sticky/hot in my denim shorts at night. This year I’m planning a bit more (as you will see), and while I’m not bringing all of this (and returning some because I simply don’t need this many clothes) I wanted to show you what I found out there that I’m really loving right now (and per usual I kissed a lot of toads). If you notice a change of scenery in the photos, no it’s not another out-building at the farmhouse! It’s our friend/photographer Kaitlin Green’s new studio space! She, Gretchen and I had so much fun shooting these looks in her new space. My Hands Down Favorite Caftan This is the most lightweight, easy breezy cotton (but nice quality) caftan out there. I used to own the same one in blue but longer and loved it. The alternating stripes create a pattern that moves your eye around and thus distracts from what is underneath. You don’t have to tie it either if you want it to be loose (the tie is on the inside). It also comes in other colors (the darker colors aren’t see-through and you can wear it as a dress), but my goodness it’s PERFECT. I feel so cute, comfortable, and not too exposed to belly up to a restaurant at the beach or hotel. A Shirtdress That Actually Has Shape (And So Affordable!!) This dress is the real winner of the season. I’m so comfortable and I feel really cute (add a trendy bag to take it down a notch in the mom category). A Really Good Lightweight Short-Sleeved Blouse I feel like I’m not really selling this shirt well enough here, but I’ve had it for years and wear it frequently every summer because of how dang lightweight, comfortable, and wrinkle-resistant it is (or I should say it looks good with slight wrinkles and holds it shape). Emerson Fry makes new ones every year in the same shape/fabric but different colors. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Big old armpits, cute bell sleeves, thin high-quality cotton. Just glorious. Shorts are from last year (yes, we should have steamed them but they were the last outfit and I was literally out of steam). Comfortable and certainly practical/easy to wear. And while I don’t love that Target has so successfully knocked off Claire V, if Claire isn’t within your budget this bag is so cute (if you have the budget buy from the original designer, IMHO. They just came out with a new color of the grande fanny that the entire EHD team is swooning over). Tevas, always FTW – water shoes for rafting through the canals :) Also yes, that is a new WONDERFUL hat and stays on with the tie situation. It’s the best hat on the market if you ask me. A Trendy Linen Set Here is one I bought to show you that isn’t really me, but it is pretty dang good if this is your style… and from Target!!! I’m more of a denim shorts/blouse combo lady, but this linen set from Target is legit very good and my team of Gen Zers (and millennials) LOVE it. I know this is very in and trendy but it’s hard for me not to see them as a pajama set or a dorky dad set (which I know is in, I read the news and “Kramer chic” is everywhere but it’s not for me). The purse helps LOL. If you are into looking fashion forward, like a cool dorky dad, and being really comfortable, this is a great set. My New Favorite Flowy White Blouse Now THIS is way more me. Last year’s jean shorts + a new flowy, easy breezy blouse (it’s fairly cropped, too, so you don’t even have to tuck), straw hat, and DONE. I wore it with heels here (which I’m still debating if I should even bring to Hawaii, but they are so cute, comfortable (for being heels), and make my legs look so long!!). Look how trendy I am with my silver bag :) And way to go Target for that excellent hat. I’m only bringing one hat on our trip because I learned my lesson that wearing 2-3 hats at the airport and on the plane will get you a lot of weird looks and could possibly embarrass your husband and children, especially when people recognize you from social media and perhaps assume correctly that you are weird). An Incredibly Good Swimsuit Coverup Pant 100% bringing and wearing this outfit. If you haven’t dabbled in compression suits yet but have been curious, might I introduce you to Stylest (TA3 is also excellent and I love Andie and Summersalt too). This one is obviously more of a rash guard which is great for me because I get really bad sun rash if I’m not really protected (and no I don’t tan because any “tan” would just be a burn anyway). I feel extremely good in this due to the shaping compression. I first bought it in the rainbow pattern (which I call my toddler suit). It’s not exactly what I think most men fantasize about, but I feel great in it which is far more important and it’s great for family vacations. These Target pants are AWESOME (those are an XS so def size down). The suit has shelf support, BTW, but you can buy swim bras for underneath which looks like a cute bandeau for extra support. I LOVE this look. The hat has a sweet leather trim detail and the shoes are awesome for the price (I refuse to spend big money on any espadrilles as they never last more than a season for me). The Perfectly Draping Caftan This caftan might not look that incredible but the fit and fabric are AWESOME. It drapes so beautifully. Despite being so voluminous, even with my big buoys, it lays flattish on the stomach. I wish it came in a million colors – I’d buy this caftan many times over. The fabric is thin and silky but not clingy (I’m not sure how breathable it is, it’s likely a synthetic mix). Maybe it’s the black with a vertical striped floral pattern that makes it so flattering??? Dunno. And if you don’t own Haviannas flip flops get yourself a pair (I like Tkees for nicer ones but they were all sold out). They last forever, come in a million colors, and are strangely comfortable. A Cute Oversized Cover-Up I’m really into menswear button-ups as cover-ups but the long sleeve ones can be too hot. Kaitlin and Gretchen convinced me to wear this bikini top underneath but I’m projecting extreme discomfort in it (it’s actually a swim bra that I ordered to go underneath the blue/white striped one piece so that you can unzip it and have a cute swim bandeau showing). The oversized blouse is a pretty cute coverup which I plan to bring and those pull-on shorts were Madewell’s like #1 short last year for good reason. Please ignore the bunion, per usual. May I distract you with the best hat ever (again)! Wait, Is That A Swim Dress? Yep. With Pockets! Another one from TA3 (I’m currently manifesting a patterned collaboration, BTW). It’s corsetted in the back, highly shaping, and definitely more resort wear than swimming, but I LOVE IT SO MUCH. Y’all, I can totally get in with the kids, dry off, go to the bar, grab a drink, and feel cute the whole time!! The sandals are my go-to from last year (still in excellent condition) and still available. Another Cool “Kramer Chic” Set Another set that I know is cute and trendy but I think I’m just too old to not feel dorky in it (I know that this is part of why it’s “cool” because dorky is “in” but some of us just aren’t buying in). But I’m showing it off because my team loves it and thought you might. Now this set (from Topshop) is really thick, so if you are going somewhere super humid this night not be right for you. I love those Nike slides, by the way. A VERY Comfortable Dress Ok, this dress is soooooo comfortable, drapes really well, and I love that scoop neck. I personally think my “love pillows” are too big for the dress and it does make me feel like I’m hiding a baby in there, so I think it’s better on people will smaller boobs (so it hangs closer on the body). If it were cheaper I’d keep it because it’s so comfortable and still pretty. But if you are tall and smaller up top I really recommend this dress. Obviously, My Vibe From Head To Toe While denim shorts aren’t exactly great in the humidity, this whole look from head to toe is just very me, and I feel so comfortable and cute in it. Oversized (and rolled) denim shorts, a new blouse that I can’t stop wearing (has a matching long skirt, too), classic birks (oversized brass buckle), and my favorite new hat with the toggle. The shirt is cotton, breathable, and the pattern and ruffles are so fun and playful. A huge shout out to our wonderful photographer and friend, Kaitlin Green, who opened a photo studio with Paige Jones and it’s such a wonderful place to shoot. If you’re in Portland and need a photo studio for an event or for a photo shoot, I highly recommend this studio with these two lovely ladies running it. Hope this was helpful for anyone needing some spring break fashion inspo!
Read MoreNot all workout clothes are made equally, and I know because it’s kinda all I wear. I mostly live in my Vuori pants, but they can be hot for real workouts. So I went shopping and after kissing so many frogs I found a few that I love. Trying on workout clothes is almost as painful as swimsuits, honestly, and I’m always SHOCKED at how stores (Looking at you Dicks) have the most unflattering lighting and the worst dressing rooms. Some clothes made me feel very bad (hugging in the wrong places, bulging in the wrong places, or just extremely uncomfortable), but all of these I feel really really good in :) This is the splurgiest outfit with actual performance gear. The pants (medium) have slight compression but not extreme compression (a huge difference to me) and a wide waistband that stays put thus far and doesn’t cut in (if you are in between sizes size up). The pullover is awesome – pockets and cute details on the back. What you can’t see underneath is an excellent $12 workout shirt (seen below) that is super drapey. If you are into boxy zippies this one is very cute from Nike (and for another budget the Target one below is awesome). And yes, the seam up the butt in these pants is flattering (and you bet I’m flexing both cheeks here). I didn’t see these pants in the sun to attest that they are thick enough to shield from the bumps – I’m still in shock that many brands don’t do that test. What you can’t see is that the shirt has a detail on the back that keeps it loose. And those platform sneakers are definitely more lifestyle than working out but I loved them so I’m wearing them a lot just around town when it’s not super muddy here. Introducing the zippy that I’ve been wearing so many days in a row, from Target!! It’s so cute!! I’m wearing a large, BTW and I like how wide and boxy it is. And the color is so pretty. The leggings are also Target (size small) and the color is awesome. I don’t love tank tops or tight workout shirts (mostly because I’m stupidly self-conscious) but I love muscle T’s. I love that one from Sundry (my usual favorite T-shirt brand). Like most of their shirts, it’s really thin and drapey with good graphics. And while I didn’t need both pairs of New Balance, both were just very cool. These pants (Target) and top (Target) are so fun and cute (despite my modeling, the top might be too boxy for yoga, FYI). And the sneakers are my new strength training shoes because they are super stable on the base (and I love the color). What you can’t see is my all-time favorite sports bra for day-to-day stuff that I just bought. My issue with sports bras, if you have big boobs, is that nothing is supportive enough for running/jumping UNLESS you wear something so constricting that it’s highly uncomfortable and makes it hard to breathe. This one has an overall compression that I love and the straps don’t cut in more than the actual body of it. I thought this windbreaker was really cute, but it’s super pricey so I’d say unless you run frequently in wind/rain it might be a bit splurgy (I ended up returning it just because I overbought and didn’t realize it was so expensive). Probably my favorite outfit that I have worn SO MANY DAYS IN A ROW. The pants are a brand that was new to me – P.E Nation. They are so cute, flattering, and fun without being too loud. I love those slides, BTW. The sweatshirt is EXCELLENT. It’s slouchy and has exposed stitching and really cute details on the front. And the muscle shirt is another great cheap Amazon find (a tank, but loose and flattering IMHO). Lastly, I dove into the flared leg trend. I tried on like 14 pairs of these y’all and these are hands down the best. So cute, fun, and very flattering IMHO (the proportions of the flare make other parts of your body look more balanced if you are into that). The blue shirt I’ve had forever from Lululemon (I love the finger holes). The vest is super cute (I love the shoulders coming out farther than my arms) and has big old pockets with zippers for doggy bags and my phone. There you have it! In case you missed the whole gym reveal head here. Here’s to wearing workout clothes we actually feel really good in.
